My Favorite Uncle Died Okay - picture this. I went "home" to Paso Robles to spend Thanksgiving weekend with my Mom and Dad and my brothers and sister, aunts, uncles, cousins - the whole shebang. It was nice... that is until Saturday morning when we got a phone call that my uncle, whose been in and out of the hospital as a result of a long term illness, is on his "deathbed" and that he's on life support and they were gonna "pull the plug" on the following Sunday, and if we wanted to "say goodbye" to get going to Las Vegas and say goodbye.
It's always weird when something happens to the family that I have in Las Vegas. People associate Vegas with fun, vacationing, gambling etc. So, when you tell your boss - hey, I've gotta go to Las Vegas for a family emergency, well... you know in the back of your head they're thinking it's a fun trip. Oh well, I had to do what I had to do. I was scheduled off for Saturday, Sunday, and even Monday... so, I took no extra time off, just blew off a meeting and some numbers I was supposed to enter. We left on Saturday, and I saw him on Sunday morning. He was hooked up to a breathing machine. A big hose in his mouth which caused him to breath heavily. He expressed his emotions with his eyes... but even that was a chore. I told him I loved him and tried to comfort his wife, my aunt. He decided that day that he didn't want to be removed from the machine... but, the doctors told him that he would have to reconsider in five days, where they'll insert a tracheal tube down his throat and send him to a convelescent home. They said they'd remove him from life support on Thursday, the 29th. He was removed from life support at 11:00 am and died at 12:20 pm. He was 74. I leave for Las Vegas again, either tomorrow or Monday. His funeral is set for Tuesday. He was a good man, a good husband and father. I had respect for him and the things he was able to accomplish in his life. I will miss his sense of humor and his ability to lead his family. I will miss how much he loved my aunt... I love you Uncle Johnny...  |

I know it may sound corny, but I definantely think he's in a better place watching over his family! surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
