Tips for Staying Safe

Wednesday, October 16, 2002; Page A14

Police yesterday offered these tips for protection against sniper-style shootings:

• While outside, try to keep moving. A moving target is more difficult to hit than one that is standing still.

• If you must remain in one place in an area where you feel vulnerable, select the darkest part of the area to sit or stand in.

• When moving outside, walk briskly in a zigzag pattern.

• If you must stand outside, try to keep some type of protective cover between yourself and any open areas where a sniper might be located. For example, if you are fueling your car, stand between your vehicle and the gas pump and bend your knees to lower your profile.

• If you are fired on in an open area, drop to the ground and roll away from where you were standing. Look for the closest protective cover and run toward it in short, zigzag dashes.

• Be constantly aware of your surroundings while outside. Note any suspicious vehicles or activities, move away from them and report them to the police.

• Remember that a sniper with the right equipment can shoot accurately from about 500 yards away, the equivalent of five football fields

A sniper would be struggling to get me then. biggrin

I walk in a natural zig-zag pattern. Well, actually, it's more of a lurching pattern. wink

Well, if everyone did that then I think the Zig Zag walking would happen automatically...

I was watching CNN last night, during a press conference, a police officer said, ( in reference to getting a tag number.) "Carry a pen with you at all times, if there is no paper available write it on your hand."

Question Is? Where else would we write it?

It would look more insane than a mental ward during a shortage of straightjackets.

And what about ...

"If you must stand outside, try to keep some type of protective cover between yourself and any open areas where a sniper might be located. For example, if you are fueling your car, stand between your vehicle and the gas pump and bend your knees to lower your profile. "

?

Frankly, if I was afraid of a sniper at the gas station, I would be really scared to stand next to a pump for fear the bullets would miss me only to ignite the pump.

It's hard to believe someone wrote all of this very seriously. I would think it's a joke if the source wasn't so respectable.

LoL...true...hell, why not just suggest that you use the Full Service pumps instead, and then give bulletproof vests to all the gas station attendants...makes as much sense as much of this twaddle they've listed...

Even lower on the down escalator of ridiculousness is this doozy:

"If you must remain in one place in an area where you feel vulnerable, select the darkest part of the area to sit or stand in."

Ah, good point...while a sniper might have a harder time hitting ya, sitting alone in a dark area where it's hard for anyone to see ya makes it far easier for the "normal" serial killers and rapists to make you their next victim...I'm surprised they didn't suggest people run into dark alleys alone with wads of cash hanging from their pockets...

LOL... Yeah, I can't begin to tell you all that is wrong with the advice. The chances of being mugged and injured/killed by being in a dark alley in the wrong neighborhood are so much higher than being shot by a sniper. Of course, they have in mind certain areas that are prime spots for long-range shooters.

They forgot:

- Look out for well-dressed men with slicked hair and a faintly European accent, carrying a large case and methodically and painstaking assembling the different parts of a sniper scope. He probably wears all black and has a little beard too.

Sorry, it's all a bit "duck and cover" for my liking. It's a bit mad to suggest people change the way they walk etc for fear of getting shot by a sniper... omg

They forgot to advise people to crouch or crawl when they move around the streets. If you present a smaller target you'll be harder to hit. Also, next time you are going shopping try picking up some urban grey camouflage face paint.

Mad isn't it?

Have any of you seen RAT RACE (awfully hilarious, btw) when Whoopi Goldberg and daughter get out of the "rocket ship" they are walking in a zig zag fashion right onto the mental ward bus? Hilarious imagery.

LOL I guess I'm laughing alone, but Wellbeyond you spurred that scene in my mind.

Thanks! lol
