Sorry but it really bothers me - it pollutes public perception of vegetarianism and damages the credibility of vegetarian issues. In my opinion. Eat whatever you like, but don't go calling yourself a vegetarian if you aren't biggrin

Thanks for slyly offending me, ian.

I wasn't being sly and I wasn't out to offend Natsume. Simply, I was stating that people who eat fish are not vegetarians. If you eat fish, I don't think you are a vegetarian and I don't understand why you would consider yourself a vegetarian either.

Tough! I didn't insult anyone or flame anyone. The bit that says "in my opinion" means that I was posting my opinion.

People who eat fish are not vegetarians. There is no reason why they should be calling themselves vegetarians unless it is as a fashion statement or something. As I said, I believe it IS damaging to public perception of vegetarianism and it dilutes the message of vegetarian values.

my favorite dialogue with a "carnivore"

Carnivorous Coworker: Do you want some chicken pasta salad?

Me: no thanks, I don't eat meat...

CC: Oh! Well, you can have some then, it just has chicken

lol

then I give up and say I'm not hungry...

the sad thing is this happens so often...whatevs...

did someone wake-up grouchy?

Natsume said :I am a Pesco Vegetarian - which means I eat fish, dairy, and eggs.

Some do not consider this to be a vegetarian diet. To each his own (which is code for please do not attack me!!)

that's the only reason I found your response to be in anyway rude...anywho, whatevs...ain't no thang biggrin

I wasn't attacking anyone, as I said. I stated that I believe that anyone (not just Natsume) who eats fish is NOT a vegetarian, and it is absurd for them to consider themselves vegetarian.

As I say, this is an issue I care about a lot, I spend a lot of time promoting vegetarianism and animal rights and when I see the vegetarian ethos being sidetracked by people claiming to be vegetarian when they aren't, it just confuses public perception and understanding of the matter.

...another favorite is when someone makes a big roast dinner, you know with potatoes and carrots and onions all simmering in the pot with the roast for a million hours or something...

then they offer me the potatoes and carrots and can't understand why I wouldn't want them after being plucked out of the meat pot...

biggrin meat-eaters are funny wink

Haha you should try going to Japan, it's hard being a veggie over there biggrin Every restaurant I went to, I'd explain the vegetarianism thing from first principles... and they still couldn't understand why just taking the meat off my plate wasn't enough to appease me smile The biggest problem was that they cook so many dishes with fish-stock soup. Anyway having lived there for a bit I'm now a master of getting vegetarian food in Japan, I know all the restaurants smile

Well, next time I head to Japan, I'll have to get some tips! biggrin

Yah, I just found out this summer that my favorite Thai restaraunt in MPLS makes all of their "vegetarian" entrees with fish-sauce.. sad Turns out only 2 of their 12 choices are actually meat-less... It made me sad

GO IAN!

Animal rights activist, and vegan, right here. wave

The definition of a vegetarian is a person who doesn't eat animals. My fav term for the fish eaters is "vegaquarian", that's the term you should use Natsume. smile

I've never heard of such a medical condition. You probably just weren't eating a balanced diet.

But hey, listen to your doctor.

So, did you become a vegan because Prince did? Just curious.

I eat no red meat, no wheat, no dairy, and no junk food. I don't know if there is a term for not eating the above foods, but I have managed to eliminate most allergies, I have never felt better.

I was a vegetarian... but now I will sometimes eat poor, defenseless birdies...

So, in short, I am not a vegetarian anymore... sad

I don't eat red meat, pork, fish or any of that... just chicken sometimes... I feel like a cad, but I do it.

Big ups to all the *Righteous Ones*, whatever u choose
to call yourselves!

>The definition of a vegetarian is a person

I LOVE the term, Melissa! I'm one of those.
I usually say, "I'm a vege that eat's fish",
no offense. I can understand the point of not
labeling yourself a TRUE Vegetarian if you eat fish.
I've decided to go back to not eating fish.

I was never a big fan of seafood growing up anyway,
I just started eating fish again 3 yrs ago when I
started realizing I wasn't getting enough protein in
my diet.

I'm not a big fan of Tofu and I try to stay away
from eggs, fried foods, and carbs, so can someone
please recommend a healthy way to get more protein
in my diet without resorting to artificial ways
(protein powders and pills) ? Thanks. Oh, and I have another Question...how much Protein should a vegetarian try to consume on a daily basis ?

~Peace and Blessings to all,
GiGi

P.S. Hey Natsume! Pleasure meeting u at Mr. E's show last month!!! Get at me! smile

It's mad - I've been vegetarian since I was 8 yrs old - that's 17 years of my life - and yet STILL when I visit my family back in Ireland my mother stills asks me "do you eat X", "do you eat Y" where X or Y is some meat dish of some kind smile

That's the best!

My mom does the same thing... I probably started eating chicken to get her to leave me alone!

I was a vegetarian for about 15 years and it was hard to get my family to ever understand it.

I'm VERY lucky...my mom gets it now...she even keeps "vegitarian chicken stock" on hand so when she makes dishes for holly-days, I can eat them..

I think she secretely still thinks I'm gonna "grow out of it" though...13 years later and I don't think it'll happen...

SxyRican, so THAT is your org name! I'm so glad that you found me biggrin Such a trip that we ran into each other at the show! I had such a blast listening to the music and watching you shake your thang up on stage! wink

As for the amount of protein people need, I've heard you multiply your weight by 0.28 and that is the number of grams of protein you need per day.

Hope that helps! hug Gigi
