I think there's a level of understanding and intelligence that The Onion assumes the viewing audience to have, so that they'll at least "get" what they're trying to say even if they don't find it too funny...(and I'm not saying you don't understand, Jasmine, just to make that clear)... I also understand that there are those who absolutely abhor the word's use, no matter what the context and no matter what the reason or point. I'm not one of those people. I think point and context mean everything, especially in humor... OK, I may be stirring up the waters here even more. But remember that movie "Blazin' Saddles"? In the beggining of the movie these cowboys are overseeing the work of migrant Chinese railroad workers. And in the openning scene one of the Chinese workers drops dead? The cowboy walks up and says, "Dock that Chink a days pay for nappin' on the job!" in a real rednecky accent? That shit was hilarious!!!!  x 1 billion.
But I woudln't want someone calling me chink.
But the point to that skit was not to degrade Chinese people. So I, as an Asian, didn't take offense to it. i've never seen "blazin saddles", so i have no context to place that in. i'm suspicious of most race based humor. for me, in order for it to be funny i have to at least have the impression that the humorist knows the gravity of the situation and can make fun of it in the right way. i think chris rock does that every time. i also find it interesting to see who's laughing and why. everybody thinks that they're not racist but racism isn't always as obvious as people think. i know that i have feelings and beliefs that may seem racist to some, which is why i try to check myself every so often. something that i may feel is in jest, or used to prove a point, may actually just be some racist bullshit dressed up to look like satire or what have you. i'm not saying that anyone is inherently wrong for liking this poorly done piece by the onion but take a look at it seriously and check yourself. see how it's really not funny to some and why. so sorry if i've come across as the ultimate bitch here but when i see racism, i call it out and i welcome others to do the same. it may seem like i'm accusing people of being racist but hey...racism is racism and i call it how i see it. when it comes to that word, and many other forms of racism that aren't so blatant, i speak out...i don't care how uncomfortable it makes people. so sorry for calling it how i see it but it would be fake of me not to.
