I was born in 1965, there were 15 kids living on our block, and we did everthing together. Summer was one mad block party, never took lessons or went to camp. We were shoved out the door in the morning, ran home for our p b & j samich, and then back home for dinner when it was dark. Those were the days cloud9

The riding the bike with a helmet I still feel strongly about, I mean I was hit by cars, I wiped out on gravel and I jumped things on my bike only to completely wipe-out so I was picking gravel out of my leg for three weeks. Gonna raise my kids the same way, to me the question begging to be answered is;

We had fire-arms and the means to get them but there were no school shootings until recently, why is that?

My answer; see that list and the absence of spanking kids so they have respect for adults, no being abusive but installing a level of understanding about who the parents are. My parents were active in my life to the point they wanted to know where I was and what I was doing, I had to check in a couple times a day if I was running the streets all day. Now a kid stays inside sitting on their ass all day playing video games and then people wonder about childhood obesity rates, see this list. Parents are really to blame. I mean, if you didn't like the way you were raised and you want to change that, please do, but still be the parent who enforces rules and instills respect in your kids.

Just recieved this in an e-mail - I miss being a Kid in the old days! pout

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.

We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because.....

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .

We did not have Playstations, Nintendos, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms.....WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents
We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

drink

I was tellingy Val yesterday about my family doc and his "spoonful of dirt" methods for us kids....ahh the good old days.....its what made us who we are....

The world hasn't become more dangerous since then, it's just that people have become more scared of it.

that is what I keep saying and nobody believes me mad bad stuff has always been happening, only now thanks to our global village, we hear about EVERY human atrocity ever committed ANYwhere. Crime rates are dropping in most places, but the crimes actually committed are so hyped up you can't avoid hearing about them sad instead of being friendly with everyone in your street, people isolate themselves, making indoors playing unavoidable, since strangers can't watch out for your child, only you can. If everyone knew everyone, all adults would look out for each others kids like in the old days (sorry ramble redface )

Crime rates are dropping where? ever since Columbine, i have not seen such brazen crimes in my life that i see today.. ppl killing each other (some in broad daylight..), there are more pedophiles in our society than ever before.. yes, we had crime 30-50 years ago, but not like today... everytime you turn around..there's some teacher with a student, and now with the internet it's just opened up more avenues of crime...they're catching pedophiles online.. and it's not just one place... there was some statistic saying majority of the kids who are attacked by pedophiles 'know' the attacker - either a family friend or a relative... we can never go back (if we attempted it today) to the days of 'getting to know' your neighbor (no matter how much smiling they do) cause unfortunately there's alot of sick human beings...those days are gone ... we must 'isolate' ourselves and our society is more dangerous today than the past..

I don't live in the USA (but certainly in Australia and New Zealand crime rates are on the decline). Here is a chart from Wikipedia about crime in the USA

It's what I keep hearing.
Pedophiles used to not be reported, nowadays they are and they are being caught.

nod I was born in 79 and my folks were very permissive. I had a Ghostbusters Proton Pack and would go around to all the houses on the street saying that I saw ghosts in their attic windows, and that I'd get rid of them for a couple popsicles! razz

lol That's really cute. I bet you had a lot of customers.

BUt you know what's ironic, is that the same generation of people have fucked up being a kid for THEIR kids. All this emphasis on safety and cleanliness all the time... confused

Yeah it's weird, isn't it? I guess people are always trying to be better parents than their own parents ever were, and overcompensate in all kinds of different ways depending on what vibes they pick up from society, what hangups they have etc.

No, no. no. no... You're exactly the product of this new fear-struck society that Charlotte is talking about. There are NOT more paedophiles out there, they're just catching them online like you said, which means that you notice them a whole lot more. And there are NOT more violent crimes being committed, it's just that they are being aired on prime time TV to a much greater extent than before. Especially in the US, and especially under the latest administration, they WANT you to be afraid because that keeps you in check and seemingly justifies drastic measures that fit the administration's agenda. Iraq was NOT a nuclear threat and they did NOT have any links to 9/11. Don't believe the hype they're trying to sell you.

My dad told me he played with mercury. He was born in '61. He also told me a story about almost drowning in a cave in Indiana, and a bunch of other cool stuff he did. I wish I was around in those days. But I've had my share of fun too.

I understand that your neighbourhood must feel like the whole world to you, but really it's just a tiny little speck in the bigger picture. The world is not a more dangerous place than it used to be, it's just the way media likes to portray it. In general, crime is either down or holding steady, but fear is definitely on the rise and that's a huge problem.
