I thought that gelatin was from finely ground pig and/or horse hooves.
That why it makes for excellent fertilizer and rich in protein.

Jello is made of this same gelatin.

How come everyone seems to know this, and I didn't, and I took a nutrition class!!! Even my kids knew...oh well:
"According to the Gelatin Manufacturers Institute of America (GMIA), pork skin, cattle bones, and cattle hide are the predominant raw materials used to make gelatin. The raw materials are washed, soaked in acid or lime, and washed again several times. Then the materials are boiled several times to extract the gelatin. The gelatin is filtered, concentrated, chilled, and either cut into ribbons or extruded as noodles and dried. Once dried, the gelatin is ground into the required particle size, depending on its intended use. The final product is brittle, transparent, colorless, tasteless, and odorless"

STILL. I like the way Wikipedia glosses over the ingredients. I wonder if the company that makes jello (Kraft foods) has any influence??? lol

Another interesting fact

:geek:chocolate made by Campbell's Soup (Godiva), and Hershey's is made up of only 10% roach material, Nestle's chocolate has a higher percentage, some batches can be made up to almost 25% roach material. biggrin YUMMY!

I found this recipe in a vegetarian site:

vegetarian jello

4 tablespoons agar agar flakes (kanten)
1 quart fruit juice

bring to a boil, simmer for 5 minutes.
Pour into a dish, add fruits if you like.
Chill

It is really quite wonderful and perfect for this summer weather.

Animal.

I believe pig hoofs right?

It's the same stuff in Gummy bears, which caused a scandal when it was handed out as candy to Iraqi children or something a few years back.

an alternative to Jello - Kool_Aid Gels, sold right next to jello and pudding and such. Kool-Aid Gels contain carrageenan, which is plant derived (seaweed) so no animal products involved, but you still get the "jello" effect. On a weird note it is also supposedly a great personal lubricant according to wikipedia. eek

Large vats of chocolate.....roaches have a keen sense of smell....factories do OK at keeping the flies at bay.....but the roaches prove to be more difficult to control since toxins can't be used...about 1997 or so is when the feds stepped in and made a mandate that factories put a limit on the roach material in chocolate.

I have a nerdy friend that grosses me out all the time with fun facts like this all the time....I'll check with her if she still has the article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jell-O

Wikipedia BARELY mentions the actual source of gelatin, other than to say a patent was obtained long ago using goose bones.....
Since info on wkipedia is freely contributed, I wonder if Kraft doesn't influence the definition?
The science and engineering site was clear, specific and detailed.

Thank u for that there is also

Carrageen (or Carragheen)
Known as Irish Moss, It is harvested and sun-dried which bleaches it to a yellowish brown colour. Rich in iodine and vitamin A, it produces a softer gel than agar agar.
Carrageen requires thorough rinsing before use. It needs to be soaked and then well cooked with the liquid to be set and does not dissolve completely. Carrageen Mould is a traditional Irish pudding made by soaking 1/2 z/10-15 gm carrageen in water, draining and adding it to 1 pint/600 ml of milk, bringing it slowly to the boil and simmering it for 20-30 minutes, straining it and allowing the strained mixture, which can be sweetened, to set on cooling.

Carrageenan is a by-product of carrageen and is used extensively as an emulsifying, thickening and gelling additive in ice creams, jellies, biscuits, milk shakes and frozen desserts.

"Gelozone"
This is a proprietary product made of carrageenan, locust (carob) bean gum, guar gum.
It does not set as firmly as agar agar and has a slightly cloudy appearance. Gelozone is also prepared differently.

1tsp / 5ml will set 1 pint / 600ml liquid. The powder should be sprinkled onto cold liquid, which is then very gently heated until just steaming, stirring all the time. Do NOT allow the mixture to boil or the Gelozone will not gel. It sets very quickly and requires refrigeration.

In my opinion much easier 2 go 2 a good health food shop and purchase ready made Jelly (jelo) giggle

ooops sorry for the confusion, carrageenan is also used to make personal lubricant, but knowing some folks around here I should have clarified, don't want anyone takin some kool-aid gels home to their significant others, for "personal" use lol

I found this:

It's contaminated in the country it's grown. The response by posters to the info, is what's enlightening.
