This is Me: The Art of Children is a unique and pioneering project from the Association of Children’s Hospices (ACH) to showcase and sell works of art by children and young people who use children's hospice services throughout the UK. Children’s hospice services exist to help children who are not expected to reach adulthood - and their families - with the emotional and physical challenges they face, and make the most of life.

Each artist has created a piece which reflects an aspect of their lives, under the theme ‘This is Me’. This project empowers life-limited children and young people through mobilising their creativity to provide a positive contribution to the children’s hospice service which gives vital support to them and their family.

Children are amazing and we can learn so much from them

it's amazing how children communicate...all too often it goes unnoticed...they certainly seem even more advanced at it than some adults...
it's also wonderful that most children in dire situations stay so positive and inspiring...thats certainly another thing they seem more apt in doing..

we could learn so much from them...

"Children" and "hospice" are two words that should never have to go together.

This is Joanna's Story:

My name is Joanna, I am 19 years old and have Rett Syndrome. Unfortunately, this means I am wheelchair bound, although at one time I could walk short distances holding my mum or dad’s hand. My condition has left me with no voice, breathing problems, spinal deformity and learning disability. Many people look at me with pity in their eyes. What they don’t realise is, I look at them in the same manner. I have been given the gift of the most beautiful smile, and have a family who adore me.

The poem below is an interpretation of my painting. I wanted to stress that although I have a disability and suffer constant pain, I am happy and loved. I hear the birds singing in my garden, I see the beauty in Spring flowers, and most of all I’m blessed to have the time to appreciate life.

The World is in My Wheelchair

Without computers, where would you be?
Without instruction, you cannot see
The beauty of creation, the bright morning star,
The sun in its glory all seen from too far.
You’re blinded by darkness, you’re ears cannot hear
You live in a world of hatred and fear.

I live in my world, where love is the key
And people see the inner beauty in me.
My simplest achievements hold mighty praise
I’m the most beautiful in the world, so my mama says!
I’ll never go to University or obtain a degree,
But who do you think is happier –
Is it you, or is it ME?

Being in a world full off people who care and love 4 each other is one we got to keep striving for.

I have always found that people are always surprised when they visit a childrens hospice they are full of trully loving caring souls the love shared is so infectious you just can not help yourself smiling, it's all true unconditional love.

Before my Mom got worse and my Dad needed my help with her more -

I used to go to "Pet a pet"
The children love the animals and it is so good to watch them together

I believe you, and it's a comforting thought. I just wish there would be no need for such an institution in the first place, and that the children could grow up and enjoy an entire lifetime. I guess that goes without saying though.

This morning I saw a van pull up at school and drop off a girl, it said Gordon Home for Children on the side. It made me cry
