A Question for Dog Owners of the Org?

How do you stop your dog's pee from causing brown spots in your yard? Is there anything you can put on the grass to neutralize the urine and prevent brown spots?

HELP!

hah! at concrete.

If ur dogs urine has just started changing the grass then pop to the vets and get it's urine tested to be on the safe side.

I know at the rescue where the dogs urinate on the grass they get a bucket of water and put it over the area it dilutes the urine, they dont seem to have any brown marks so must work.

Personaly I have never had this problem so do not know but ive seen a product called "dog rocks" sold at pet stores, mind you i do not know if it works.

It's perfectly normal for female dog's urine to kill grass as it is very acidic.

I suggest you teach your dog to go in a specific area.

God makes girlie dog's wee-wee turn the grass brown so that you know which parts of the lawn are still good to sit on.

If their wee-wee didn't make it go brown, you wouldn't know where it was and you'd sit on it.

Try WALKING your dog instead of just letting it into the yard. I hate lazy ass dog owners who keep their dogs in the yard, get a hamster if you're that lazy. evil

hug you could take your dogs for two huge walks a day but they still
need that "first thing in the morning" pee and the "last thing before bed" pee
when you have a yard they just pee in the yard shrug

Many times it has to do with their diet. Talk to your vet, they should be able to give you some suggestions.

Some owners, like my parents, have huge, fully fenced yards (my parent's have a park-like, fully treed and fenced acre). Their dog runs the shit outta that yard when she's out - and much prefers to run then be on some leash walking at a slow pace. It's not so much about laziness as it is about keeping that dog happy. She is in incredible shape for an 11 year old large dog.

Uzie's rarely on a leash, despite the fact that I don't have a yard. It's not ONLY about walking your dog to get it exercise, it's about activating it mentally as well. ALL dogs need some kind of mental training to be happy, like finding toys/treats, tracking, obedience, canine agility, protection work etc. Walking your dog isn't just about letting it pee and poop, it's about contact training between handler and dog too. Or rather, it SHOULD be.

Yep, bad food will do that to the dog. Too many crap ingredients make the kidneys work harder, in turn making the urine more concentrated.

It's funny that you say that. This dog doesn't even go outside unless someone is out there with her. She craves constant human interaction. That's why I talked about keeping her happy...she's constantly stimulated. It's just not on the end of a leash walking at a slow pace - she simply just can't deal with that - German Short-haired pointers are not really made to be walked around the city on a leash, they are birders and retrievers and need to just go go go.

Get your dog spayed. Female dogs' urine only has the effect of killing your grass around the time they're in heat.

Dog urine acts like an ultra concentrated fertilizer. There's so much nitrogen in it, that's why the lawn burns. It really doesn't have anything to do with the dog's diet, but the grass itself and the amount of urine that the dog pees out at once.

Female dogs do the most damage because they go pee in one spot, emptying their bladder at the time. Whereas male dogs pee here and there, marking their territory.

Not ALL female dogs do that, at least not if they're un-neutered and high in rank - Uzie marks her territory all the time. And before anybody asks why, she isn't neutered partly cos it's not as common here as it is in North America, partly cos before she turned 5 years old my breeder had the option of using her for one litter and partly cos it really isn't that much of a nuisance to begin with, if you can keep your dog in sight and realise the strength of all animals nature - to breed. When I do have money I WILL neuter her though, she's turned 5 now and neutering her lessens the risk of breast cancer and eliminates the risk of cancer in the uterus.
