so, I think I was set up tonight...

A friend invited me to go with him and his boyfriend to see the Frida exhibit at the museum tonight. We were meeting some of his boyfriend's friends there. Long story short, we all finally meet and it's 2 gay couples, a straight couple, me and this guy.

neutral

Why don't people warn me about these things? I was wearing my work clothes. I didn't even bother with make up.

In any case, we were clearly not each other's type at all (though he was cute) and I purposely spent the night walking around by myself in the museum and sitting at opposite ends of the table when we went for drinks after.

I am horribly shy. lol

Has anyone ever done this to you?

the few times this has been done to me in the distant past, i've had to SERIOUSLY contemplate how my friends must view me in order to think i could EVER be interested in some of the (nice enough and perfectly charming) FREAKERS they've chosen to set me up with. wacky

Yes!

But whenever I've been in that situation, it was because I was having to take the grenade for the team.

Perhaps I read too much into it and that wasn't the case, but it all seemed terribly, I don't know, convenient.

And he didn't seem too thrilled about it either. lol

It is rude.

"Taking the grenade" for the team, for guys means, when you're willing to go out on a double date with the dumpy or psychotic friend of the girl your buddy is seeing.

It's all part of the "Bro's before Ho's" thing that I'm glad I've outgrown. lol

Thank God, no. I've been spared that experience.

But, a good friend's sister asked me why I wouldn't take her out... She was being deliberately awkward that weekend, as I recall. disbelief

My best friend once tried to set me up with a man at a bar, but the man wasn't my type at all. But I don't think he was too interested in me, either, so it wasn't too awkward. biggrin

That was some years ago. I don't know whether to feel sad or reliefed because my friends don't try to set me up anymore. biggrin

Yeah, it's happened to me a couple of times the last year or so. It's interesting though, because they've been "sex setups" rather than "relationship setups" (they've even admitted it afterwards). I guess people assume I'm in a much more desperate need to get laid than to find love. lol

Either way I think it's a nice gesture, for lack of a better term. I mean, it's not ill-intended or anything but rather the opposite, and if they don't give you a heads up it's probably just because they want things to unfold in a natural way and give you a chance to feel like you discovered this person yourself without their assistance.

Yeah once.

It really pissed me off,
cuz
I just couldn't imagine what I ever said or did to give em the impression that
paintings done by some unibrowed mustached spanish chick was something worth doing other than staying home & catching up on my "stories" that I had TiVoed.

No, no, no.

I need full preparation. And last night it was hard enough for me to prepare to hang out with a bunch of people I don't know. It can take DAYS for me to work up to be able to talk to strangers at parties and such and it's worse when it's someone I find attractive. If I left it up to "natural" I'd never have a date at all. lol

I really can be unbelieveably shy.

A couple of girlfriends once tried to get me to do one of those speed dating things with them. They almost bought my ticket without even asking me cause they knew I'd be reluctant. I finally had to explain that spending an evening being forced to make chit chat one on one with potential dates would be a complete and utter living hell for me. One of them still tried to convince me even after that.
