18 year old kills eight in Finnish school shooting! Eight people have been killed and at least 10 others injured in a shooting at a school in southern Finland, police have said.
The gunman shot himself in the head and later died from his wounds in hospital, officials said. The shootings took place in Tuusula, some 50km (30 miles) north of the capital, Helsinki. Finnish police said an 18-year-old man killed five boys, two girls and the female principal of Jokela High School. Investigators have reportedly identified the gunman as Pekka-Eric Auvinen. It felt unreal - a pupil I have taught myself was running towards me, screaming, a pistol in his hand Kim Kiuru Jokela school teacher A teacher said the gunman, who had posted footage foreshadowing the massacre on video-sharing website YouTube, was a student at the school. Police responded to a call made at 1144 (0944 GMT) and made contact with the gunman when they arrived at the school 11 minutes later, said Timo Leppala, the officer in charge of the police operation. "Police ordered him to surrender, to which he answered by shooting towards the police," Mr Leppala said. He described a scene of chaos with students jumping from school windows and running for shelter as more police arrived. It is not clear when the gunman shot himself in the head. He said he then told his students to "jump out of the windows... and all my pupils were saved". 'My war' The gunman had posted a video called "Jokela high school massacre 11/7/2007" on YouTube in the past two weeks. Going by the username Sturmgeist89, he called himself a "social Darwinist" who would "eliminate all who I see unfit". "Sturmgeist" means storm spirit in German. The video has now been removed from the website. He had also reportedly posted on another website a rambling manifesto. In it he said: "death and killing is not a tragedy... Not all human lives are important or worth saving." He wrote that he was acting alone and nobody is to blame for his actions. This is the first time something like this has ever happened in Finland.
Man... this kind of stuff is something that happens in America and we read about in the newspaper or hear about it on the news. Never expected something like this to happen in Finland. After the incident, I read some of the stuff this guy had posted prior to the shooting. He was a delusional fuck, who thought he was better than everyone else. 'Compared to you people, I'm godlike' and stuff like that. He thought the human race was not worth trying to save and thought most of us would be better off dead. Now, I think most people ('the masses') are pretty darn stupid too, but I sure as hell don't go around killing people because of it. He called himself the 'Natural Selector' and 'Sturmgeist' (which has a Nazi vibe to it). He idolized all the American school shooters, like those two guys from Columbine, Eric & Dylan. As all these school shooters tend to do, he also shot himself in the head after his killing spree. He did not immediately die however. It sucks...
the media emphasizes on the killer in these instances. The victims are just numbers in the end. I think some of these crazy ppl crave the fame they get even if they do not live to see the aftermath. It is a shame that none of his family or friends realised he was so sick. I feel sorry for the victims and their families. It is so sad that these things keep happening.  | |

He had gotten his gun carrying permit just a couple of weeks ago. I don't understand why the fuck 18 year olds are allowed to have gun carrying permits. that's what's wrong with the world today We do have a lot of guns, but we have very, very little gun-related violence. I do agree though, this ain't right. Regular people shouldn't be permitted to buy guns. though it was a comforting thought that when my brother in law applied for a licence recently to acquire a fire arm he was denied - and he is no kid or hooligan. I think here at least for the time being you can't get them so easily (over the counter at least). | |

I'm kinda surprised that Finland is up there too. I mean, according to that, roughly half the population owns a gun. I only know one person that owns and gun, my grandpa, and I've never seen him take it out or use it. Hell, he hasn't even had bullets for his gun in aaaages. Really sad, if you have kids be active in their lives, what they read, how they're doing in general. The videos are disturbing and it seems like he didn't just come into this mindset recently. | |

After that I studied for a year at the University of Vaasa and now I'm about to do my civil service. It starts in January.
