DC Comics to Kill Off Bruce Wayne?

http://www.comicbookresou...?column=13

This is as bad as Marvel's "Red Hulk". Neither company knows what to do with their characters these days.

Just like Captain America.

First Marvel and DC bring back Jason Todd and Bucky at around the same time and now they are going to get rid of Captain America and Batman within a year of each other. disbelief

WTF? They can't do that. It's not Batman unless it's Bruce Wayne.

This is why comic books are dead. Really.

I have been a comic reader/collector since 1976. However, the number of titles I am reading has been rapidly dwindling over the past year and a half. Killing off Bruce Wayne would push me to finally stop reading all together!!!

Sure, in the past it was fun to read a story of some "alternate" Earth or Elseworlds story, where Bruce isn't under the cowl or where Dick takes up the mantle of the bat, because they all stood outside of the main continuity of the title(s). Unfortunately, since the Crisis (of Infinite Earths; the grandaddy of them all) in 1985 we've been stuck with these single thread continuities for characters. Killing off BW is just a way for DC to bring some attention to an industry that is losing readership.

I remember when I was a kid, buying comics for a quarter. I got a $2/week allowance. I usually spent half of that on Comics... Today, they're 2.99 to 3.99 EACH. What kid is going to want to spend $4.00 on a comic that he'll read once???

I can deal with Bruce Wayne breaking his back and having a "fill-in" for a short time...

But I will not continue on if they permanently kill him off.

And I will DEFINITELY not come back in 2 years when Dick tosses Bruce's body in a Lazarus pit yet again

I don't think comics are dead. Remember when Marvel was bankrupt and people were speculating if all their titles would cease to be published? That's when comics were dead. I think in the last few years, comics have gotten a little better attracting big name writers to pull readers back in. I agree there is still a problem of attracting kids who will be the geeks of tomorrow. What's going to happen if there's no one to replace the buyers of today who get older each year?

Definitely NOT dead... However, very faaaaar from the heyday of the mid 80's/ealry 90's.

They should be pulling readers in with engaging storylines as opposed to large-scale "events" which go on ad-nauseam and cross multiple titles. I believe that while these "shock" events (death of Cap/ death of Bruce Wayne) may gain some new readers for the short term, those same events turn-off the long time reader. The kids who used to get lost in the escapist fantasy of the world of comics have found other venues to travel in this multi-media, internet based world we live in...

Wow, I totally agree with you. That´s exactly the same way I feel...the prices they charge are ridiculous, ok..we´re no longer in the 70s and 80s but still, 2.99 or 3.99 compared to a quarter back in the days....same situation over here in Germany, same prices etc.
I kinda lost interest in the mid 80s, before John Byrne revived Superman...by that time, they ( DC ) had already lost me...in 1985, most DC storylines and especially the artwork were utter shit, so I turned to Marvel, which I really liked up until that Ben Reilly/Peter Parker fiasco and all those different versions of Spiderman and the various magazines and alternate realities that suddenly became "reality".

Actuall, I´m so confused when it comes to DC and Marvel that I´d need some sort of schooling on who´s who and what happened when.

Is there any such site where I could read up on what I´ve been missing ?

I know they're trying to attract attention and all, but this is just horrible. You can't kill off Bruce Wayne. You just can't. He's the best character DC will ever have. You can't do it.

I've never really cared about Batman much. I've only read the issues by favorite artists like Jim Lee and Alan Davis. I'm currently collecting Neal Adams' Batman comics. They're great. biggrin

DC killed off Superman once, too. I'm sure if Bruce Wayne dies, it'll be just as temporary. nod

But Marvel cancelled New Excalibur. I think that's real bad news. sad

The last I heard, Paul Cornell who wrote the excellent Wisdom limited series will be the new writer when Excalibur is relaunched yet again. When that will happen, not even Marvel knows.

I highly recommend Wisdom. I believe it's collected in a TPB now.

This is what I hate. Some one creates a great character in the 1930's and then it's 2007 and some 25 year old working at DC comics (drinking on his red bull) thinks it's a great idea to kill off Bruce Wayne. The only person that has the right to kill off a character is the person who created it in the first place. I don't acknowledge any characters that gets killed off if it's not by the person who created it. Just imagine you create a charcter, then some one (who's not even born yet) decides to kill off your character because they think it's cool. Well killing off heroes is nothing new, in fact it's getting old!!!!! Once again don't buy the comic (or acknowledge it)>

I'm so against the idea of DC Comics to have Bruce Wayne kill off (especially if he's just renew his role as the leader of The Outsiders just a few months ago).

Instead of killing him, why not let him go on early retirement as a superhero. As Bruce Wayne, he can still keep The Outsiders on his payroll. And have Dick Grayson (Nightwing) take his place with the JLA.
