Since your daughter does it, it never feels appropriate to say what I really think about bellydancing.

you can say whatever you like BUT if you ever speak to my daughter about her or her dance in any way but RESPECTFUL - I'll kick your ass

It's so incredibly spellbinding that I can't believe it's not more popular than it is.

I have to add that I am more drawn to traditional BD - not over americanized (sexualized) hollywood BD I admit I don't really know the difference. I have seen my Canadian friend's bellydancing teacher (who is from Iran) perform, and it looked very very sensual. Maybe she'd adapted her style to the Canadian market, but I doubt it. I can't be sure though.

I can't be sure though. BD is a very sensual dance style in it's traditional form I find that the people, both the men and women, that come from countries where BD has deep roots have a far deeper respect for it and for the dancers. Often times here is the US it's viewed as a sexual thing cuz sex sells and all that jazz Jess has studied traditional BD over 10 yrs now and her dance tribe leans more towards the higher respect of anf from both the men and women. I like that. It has taught Jess many things like how to be very comfortable in her body and to feel the power of being a sensual being while knowing it is good and right to demand respect.

excellent! did you enjoy yourselves?
i saw a clip the other day of something the furthest from traditional you could ever get! a dancer in norway bellydances to metal music. she was interviewed as a part of a canadian anthropologist's popular documentary, "metal - a headbanger's journey" in which she said it's a way for her to connect with the music and not just be a headbanger. certainly different, but i guess no matter what music you listen to if that's the way you let your body move then that is the way you are going to move
