Yeah. It was one of those wavy gravy earthquakes. Those make me dizzy. Although I don't prefer the ones that lift you and then drop. Those are scarier.

I've only been through a couple of significant ones. Never a lift-and-drop. omg

yeah, i was at dinner with some co-workers in pleasanton and we felt it strong...like miquel said, it felt like the 89 earthquake...long and rolling...then i got a text message saying they thought it came from stockton which freaked us all out (stkn doesnt have the infrastructure to withhold an earthquake)...but i got home and found out it was under miquel and i calmed down..

oh wait, then i transfered my concern over to miquel...glad to hear you are okay buddy. hug

Tick-tock tick-tock California's got a clock, not long until she drops.

Bigger quake's coming people - that's why fault lines aren't great settlement area's.

falloff Probably the first time in his life he has ever REALLY felt insignificant.

Eh no no no!

lol

This scares the shite out of me, reading this thread. As an Englishman with really only George Bush to fear in our little island paradise, this notion of the ground moving is a “no compute” area for me.

The idea of kids crying because it is their first and adults entering complacency. You should be scared, shouldn’t you? I guess you spend your lives just getting on with it. We have the odd 4 quake now and then but we know there is no real risk.

Anyway, keep safe and I hope the big one is not ever goanna come.

"Earthquake...shake it down!!!!"

I am in Hayward a few miles North of the epicenter and WOW did I feel it. Actually I heard it a split second before I felt it. Luckily there was only minor damage (things falling off shelves) and no injuries reported.

Good thing this was centered on the Calaveras fault and not he Hayward fault. The Hayward fault is due to break a big one anytime now. If the Hayward fault goes, it is supposed to cause MAJOR damage. Especially since so many people live right on or by that fault and it is supposed to cause a 7.0 or greater quake(I live only about 3/4 of a mile from it).

The Hayward fault is about 74 miles long and runs from San Jose along the base of the East Bay Hills into San Pablo Bay (from San Jose through Fremont, Union City, Hayward, San Leandro, Oakland, Berkley) and it runs parallel to the San Andreas fault.

I'm totally igorant about these things, but is the primary problem with earthquakes due to infrastructure collapse?

I mean, if you were standing in a field it wouldn't really be harmful to you, right?

Or are the major ones more violent than that?

You are pretty much right unless you were at a spot where the ground opened up.

And don't forget the aftermath. Not just buildings, but the many key roads and airports that will be deystroyed cutting off the supply lines. Plus Gas and water lines breaking.

It is estimated that an earthquake on the Hayward fault will make approximately 1900 roads impassable. So surviving the actually earthquake itself is just the first step. Surviving the next couple of weeks with most likely being cut off from food and water and other services/supplies is just as deadly.

its infrastructure...unless the earthquake is directly on top of a fault and the land cracks and sucks you in...kinda like lois lane in superman.
