Do U know anyone who has one of those $19.95 a month dohickies? You know.
THe commercial that attempts to sell you products you never knew you needed, for 9.95, 19.95, or 29.95 a month (depending on the crappiness level of the product of course). Like on those weird commercials that try to sell you the top secret oil-of-Orange-Peel cleaners that can rid a room of any forensic evidence of foulplay, all without the need to wipe or scrub! Or knitting needles that allow you the knit a sweater in 3 seconds, all without moving your wrists. I personally have not bought any products I've seen on T.V., but I find them fascinating. My dad bought a few things, but never the ones I found most fascinating. He bought Slim Whitman's greatest hits , and a set of expensive Encyclopedias once or something The only thing I almost bought was this really neat set-it and forget-it rotisserie cooker, but after hearing Mitch Hedberg call those "morbid ferris wheels of impaled chickens", I thought better of it. my sister in law bought the set of steak knives - but WAIT there's more! she got a bread knife and a sharpener and etc etc etc and paid an absolute fortune.
BUT! 12 years later, I was over there on saturday cutting up some crusty bread, and those knives are amazing!!! "best thing I ever bought" she told me http://www.cutco.com (where's my commission )

"best thing I ever bought" she told me http://www.cutco.com (where's my commission ) I used to sell cutco knives back during my younger days through a company called Vector marketing. They. are. the. most. amazing. knives. ever.... I mean, seriously, if you're willing to shell out 800 bucks on a knife set, you'll never regret it. They will last you the rest of your damned life. And they are extremely sharp. People are always nicking themselves when they use the knives---even after 20+ years of use they're sharp.

We don't live in such a consumerist society in the UK to the same extent as over in the US, so no. Usually the adverts we have in the UK are generally for something that's useful. There's Joy In Expatriation.
