Fires in Southern California

http://news.yahoo.com/s/a..._wildfires

I don't think I have ever seen so much smoke in my backyard. Wind is still blowing pretty hard
Some shots I took about an hour ago

Hope everyone is okay

V are you one of the one's that have to be evacuated, cause it looks awfully close to you?

The smell of smoke is everywhere, but not as bad as the whole Cedar thing this way.

That smoke blew our way from the city of Irvine, Im about 20 minutes aways from that actual fire, so lucky no we are not one of the ones that were evacuated, thank God. It's almost midnight here and the winds are still pretty strong. And I know what you mean with the smell of the smoke, I've been smelling here too since early afternoon

Good. There seems to be several fires up and down the "coast" here. I wonder how the people with allergies and asthma are making out.

I was just going to ask if your area is being affected.

Where I am, the smoke is barely creeping in now.... todays wind should suffocate the place. my house is covered in a film of dirt from the wind...since it will reoccur today, I'll leave it be....

Its covered 24 hours all stations by the media which is an all points bulletin to arsons.... I damn hate that.

Sorry to hear that the fire is so close to you Veronikka, it seems like all of southern California is on fire sad
It breaks my heart to see the news and watch so much destruction. Santa Barbara is fine, but of course we just got over our last major fire, that lasted over a month and burned 200,00 when all was said and done.

I shouldn't feel bad for multi-multi millionaires, but I can't believe that castle in Malibu burned! I grew up in malibu and the castle loomed over much of my childhood. I even toured it once. It's a bit like losing any piece of the landscape. It was pretentious & ridiculous, but kind of cool at the same time.

I remember evacuating for the fires, actually kind of fondly. It was exciting to a very young child, and we never lost our home (though the fire once burned across the street)

My niece graduated from Pepperdine University, I was watching the fire all lastnight praying it would not hit the beautiful campus.

Yeah, it's a beautiful campus. It's pretty protected on the west side by all those huge lawns, but I don't know about the east side.

I remember one year the fire was very close to Pepperdine. We were stuck in traffic, so we pulled over. My dad went up on the Pepperdine campus to take a photo (which he knew he wasn't supposed to be doing). Suddenly there was all this commotion and a helicopter nearly landed on his head. He was right by a pond that they were using to refill the water dumping helicopters!

I work in Irvine. 3 arson fires were started in the Orange/Irvine area of Northwood and the Santa Ana Canyon. They shut down the 15 freeway last night and restricted high profile vehicles today because of the winds. They shut down all the tolll roads going through the canyon (241/261/133) and it took me 3 hours to get to work today in the vanpool. If I drove alone, it would have taken me 4 hours. Going south on the 5, the smoke got worse and we couldn't even see the sun. The wind it making it a lot worse

What's wrong with people??? What satisfaction can you possibly get by setting these fires? mad

Muse, it's time to move. Seriously. It's been unseasonably warm in New England and every year it stays warmer, longer. Just sayin'!!!! wink
