Can you tell what someone is like just by their posts?

or

?

Can you tell what somebody is really like by reading their posts? Have you been proven right/wrong? Have you discussed it with them? How do you imagine someone to be like? Does your true personality come out in your posts?

I don't! I have terrible eyebrows in fact. I think I'm going to end up looking like Denis Healy when I'm older.

I think it is easy to misjudge someone just by reading their posts...especially those ppl that just say things for shock value.
some ppl are more upfront about who they are when they post..others just say things to get attention.
I think that is why I communicate through orgnotes a lot.

I think that to a certain extent, its difficult to try to figure a person out thru their posts....for me, I'd carry an image into a "meet" situation to see if it jibes with what I put together from the posts....

Nah, I don't think you can truly tell what someone is like until you get to know them. You can get a hint of their personality or they're leanings (conservative/liberal), but not what they're really like.

razz it takes me a while to get people in real life. Textually, it's still a task. The only person I've been able to identify via posts/text would be my bf Darren. That was only because he and I share similar traits character-wise. Even then, I found out there was TONS I didn't know.

biggrin Tons of sexy stuff.

in case of post/fence type jokes, I was beginning to think I'd never get the chance to use it.

If I compare the way people come across through their posts with how they come across on the phone then yeah, it's interesting how well the impressions match. Only once or twice have I been surprised, and then it's mostly had to do with people's voices or how talkative they are rather than more profound things.

Depends on the person.

Muse2nopharoh and CarrieMpls are exactly what I pictured when I met them in real life. With Carrie, it was her personality matching up with the things she said over the years on the org---with Karen, it was because I already *knew* her before meeting her.
Same with cborgman, endo, and heybaby.

Surprises for me were:
Anx, sosgemini, and Ripher2shreds

sosgemini was the biggest surprise. He's very very charismatic and fun in real life. On these forums, he's positively grinchy!

agreed! lol

I think most people I've met have been pretty much what I expected, but there are always a handful of surprises. It depends how much time you spend getting to know someone online and how well they communicate themselves in this format.
