Ok- so i inspect houses .

Yesterday - I had this inspection that was set up by my firm. They said the "german speaking " lady called the office and said she wants her husband there ... when i get there (to feel safe i presume) .

Real nice townhome type place (circa 1875+/-) in a small American city . (i looked it up at the county courthouse level... neat looking ... older ...very large place (5500 sq feet +/-)!

So . I have this mental image . Neat inner city . European pad. etc.

well, i get there . The old man and old lady kinda fight over who is going to walk around with me ... the old man says "it is your house- go ahead and show him " and disappears... while she is argueing saying "no i wanted you to be here too " ... etc ...

She proceeds to show me all the "problems with the house" ... The place has NO heat (furnace broke down and they did NOT repair it ....) and the roof has multiple leaks (complete with buckets of standing water in ... and watermarks coming down from the 3rd floor.... )

I tell ya - if i owned a "flip this house" type company - this place would have been perfect for it ! It had 2 floors with high ceilings (maybe 14 feet?) - multiple fireplaces(probably decorative)- a great Library/office (with the decorative mahoghany wood trim/walls ) ....

I am still kinda in shock about it ... i figured - because they were "european" i just had this image ... that they always kept their places /cars etc in tip top shape .... anyone else have similar stereotypes that would blown out the window ???

ps:In defense of all Germans- these folks were danish ...

I always had this image in my mind as British folks being more refined than Americans.
Much of that was dispelled when I went there this year. But their accents are still disarmingly good at keeping up the illusion.


My favorite are stereotypes folks have about Asians and the shock they encounter when trying to reconcile that with me.

I was shocked that so many Europeans smoked. I always pictured you guys are more progressive with such things--like smoking would be illegal there except in the middle of large crop-circle fields or something.

And it's even worse in Paris--EVERYBODY smokes there.

But I used to notice whenever my white friends would get around any of my black friends, they'd start talking "black". As if my black friend couldn't understand them if they stayed within their own comfort zone.


(I always get someone posting some shit like "what's talking black mean"--Bitch please , like talking "Asian" isn't understood to sound like Long Duck Dong )

But I noticed it alot in the 90's and not so much today. But it used to annoy me because it meant that they were not comfortable in the presence of a black guy, and in a desperate attempt to be more affable, they tried to slip into a more "urban vernacular" as if that was really necessary
