Anxiety said: i was in a band for about a year when i was in college. we were a six-piece and we did a jumble of stuff, based on what songs we wrote or who wanted to sing lead or be in charge of each song. we did some rockabilly, some alterna-jangle, some industrial, some glam rock...it was fun and schizophrenic and we did pretty well with it. i quit after about a year and tried to start another band and we lasted about six months and only did one show, but it was one GOOD show so at least it wasn't a waste of time, i guess.
I can relate to that. It takes a helluva lot of work to keep a band going. We've done three shows in the last year and a half. If there's someone who is willing to take on leadership, it can get easier as you get the act down, but then creatively you want to keep growing...there's always more that could be done. I'm satisfied with one or two GOOD shows anyday.

I only played flute in middle school & high school. I hated going out there and marching every Friday night, but I loved playing the flute. Our uniforms sucked too compared to most high schools. We had full tuxedos.....cummerbund, neckties and all instead of the flashier uniforms with the giant headgear. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

Yes...and yes.
I've been in bands (off and on) for 23 years or so... In 1984 (when I was fourteen and Purple Rain was the world's biggest music-oriented movie), I formed my first band with my brother, my best friend, and his brother. We learned songs like "Jungle Love", "Let's Go Crazy", and any of Babyface's early productions. The four of us thought we were decent. We weren't. In '87 (shortly after I got my first synthesizer) we started recording original tunes. By then it was just me and my best friend (our younger brothers moved on to bigger and better things). We started making tapes, booking 'studio' time in our friend's basement (he had some cheap recording equipment). I began learning how to arrange and produce songs. I thought I was decent. I wasn't. In '88 I went away to college, fell in love, and wrote ridiculous amounts of music. During that time, my best friend was sent to Desert Storm. I would send him cassettes of songs I had written, and he would send them back to me with vocals and (occasionally) additional instrument parts (guitar, saxophone). In 1990 I joined a band while in college. We had a trumpet player and we learned some mellow songs and updated some jazz standards. We played stuff like 'Round Midnight' and 'The Secret Garden'. I thought this band was decent, and they were - but not because of me. After that, I gave the band thing a rest for a while. I did some studio work that saw worldwide release, but the girl I had fallen in love with so many years earlier finally realized she loved me as well, and I focused on our relationship (which lasted three years). My next band experience would be my current one, which I joined in 2006. Yep, that's right. I started writing songs again immediately after the relationship ended, but I waited fifteen years to return to the stage (and I'm glad I did). I play keyboards and sing in a band here in the Cincinnati area (Tommy Tsunami and the Suicide Surfers). We're a cover band and we play rock, punk, a little pop - basically party-oriented music. During the good months, the gigs pay my rent and bills. I have matured in one very important way. I look upon this experience with gratitude and modesty - I don't think this band is decent at all! Fortunately, the crowds seem to think otherwise...

This is not that great for two reasons. 1) I recorded it off of the t.v. 2) We were hung-over during the performance. It's my favorite part of the show. 1982 Tournament of Roses Competition '76 Independence Cavalry Band "Anytime, anyplace!!" Been in bands most of my life.
High School - Angry Metal, every gig ended in a fist-fight Recorded multiple instruments and made some funk music by myself. Now in a band that does some covers (but can't post them to myspace) and some other originals. People not showing up is stopping me from booking the band so we've yet to play out after 6/9 months of random rehearsals.

We played a show a week & a half ago. People said it was our best ever.
We started as a cover band and we've started playing our own stuff. But we still sound like a juke box--all over the place. And we're all too nice to address any serious issues in the band. My Legacy

I play third back-up rhythym guitar in our church's Youth Praise Band, but only in rehearsals. I let the kids play on Sundays. I am teaching them some of Prince and Bruce Springsteen's moves.
I really want to be in a grown-up band. Time is tough, though.
