Sadly, the two golden rules of comics no longer exist and everything is up for grabs...
Rule #1: Bucky stays dead Rule #2: Jason Todd stays dead It'll only be a matter of time before Marvel brings Steve back. As far as the new Captain America costume goes... Well, I'm just gonna ride the fence for a while. I'm an old traditionalist and I'm not very happy with this change. Even though I'm Canadian, I always liked Cap's costume...yes, even the big goofy "A" on his forehead. I can understand why Alex and company made the choices they did in the design (after reading the article at Comic Book Resources) and that's what's tempering me at the moment from completely disliking it.

Rule #1: Bucky stays dead Rule #2: Jason Todd stays dead It'll only be a matter of time before Marvel brings Steve back. It's interesting that both characters were brought back at around the same time. Rule #3 is still intact: Uncle Ben stays dead. When that one is overturned, I will quit comics forever.

okay...this is going off topic of the original post...but...
Mar-Vell wasn't brought back from the dead. He was plucked from the past, before he knew he had cancer, and brought to the present. As I recall, he does know of his fate. Still...his return still feels like a bit of a kick to the face. And... Ben Parker was brought back by taking one from an alternate universe and subsequently killed. Still very lame. And... Barry was last seen helping to fight off Superboy-Prime in the speed force during Infinite Crisis.

Still very lame. That's a little different. Every dead character is alive in another reality. But this is why the Monitors over in DC are hunting these reality-jumping people and erasing them. They're driving fans crazy!

I had boxes and boxes of Marvel comics in the 80s, but in 1989 when they brought back the original Red Skull, they started to lose me. My infatuation was REALLY over when they did that whole "Peter Parker's parents are still alive/oh, no wait, they were just clones." I heard they just did an angle where Norman Osborn fathered twins with Gwen Stacy. YE GODS! That Gwen Stacey story was J. Michael Straczynski's lowest point. The Spider-Man titles are still a mess. Marvel overall is better than it was in the 90s, but there's still a lot of fixing that needs to be done. With the convoluted histories of all their characters, I don't know if they can be fixed. I think they're beyond hope, sadly. I remember collecting the Marvel Universe Handbook Book of the Dead series back in the late 80s, and by the end of the 90s, nearly half of the characters in there had been brought back to life. It seems like only the villians who were killed by Scourge actually stayed dead. Christ, they even brought BUCKY from the '40s back! That really lost me for good.

Hate the costume. Hate the gun.
But it'll be interesting to see what Marvel does with this character at this point. First a dead CA, then the hint at his possible resurrection in a foreign, brutish form, now with offensive inclinations. Potentially fascinating political statement they may be making given the times. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Marvel's gone way downhill with all this retcon sh!t. Right now the only decent storylines are Thor and World War Hulk. But they even f-cked WWH up by having him fight Sentry in the final issue. Whoever created Sentry should be shot. Nothing but a Superman ripoff. Hulk vs. Thor would have been awesome. Hopefully Greenskin will finish Sentry off.

Shipping this month: [Edited 11/1/07 13:37pm] Mar-Vell returns during Marvel's Civil War event.[3] This version of the character has been plucked out of space/time after his battle with Nitro but before he starts to show signs of his illness. Although he appears healthy, Mar-Vell is made aware that his body harbors the cancer that will one day kill him. The one-shot ends with Mar-Vell donning his Nega Bands in order to serve as the warden of the new Negative Zone prison, built for supervillains and unregistered superheroes alike, and save it from destruction. During the climatic battle on the streets of New York, Captain Marvel is seen flying behind the clone Thor to reinforce Iron Man's team. It is later revealed by Norman Osborn in the pages of Thunderbolts that Mar-Vell has since abandoned his post as warden of "Prison 42". Mar-Vell will be starring in his upcoming solo miniseries written by Brian Reed. So technically, he's still dead & he'll have 2 return 2 his era or, should he stay, he'll get his cancer soon enough, changing that would erase his death from continuity & pose many problems.

Yes, well, Marvel is not too big on continuity these days, so who knows if he'll return to his era. But I read in She-Hulk #21 that tourists from Earth A has been the cause of continuity errors on Marvel Earth. It was She-Hulk from Earth A who slept with Juggernaut during Chuck Austen's run on the X-Men, not the one from Marvel Earth. So maybe this Captain Marvel is from Earth A too, although I kind of doubt it. [Edited 11/3/07 5:16am] FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!
