if it is mold ... it is a symptom i believe that u have either :

wrong soil PH

or too much damn water ! (mold grows with moisture i believe) ...

it goes away when the dirt dries out, but then the plant dies

It might help to put something underneath the plastic pots so that they are level with the top of the white outer one. That way the top of the dirt won't be in shade all the time. Mold likes shade, usually.

Get some sun on the actual soil, and make sure there is some air circulation. Report back in a few weeks. nod

maybe you're watering too often. Try watering more each time, but less frequently.

Garlic kills mold, chop a few cloves up and place right on the dirt...you plants are like orchids, don't move them if they grow well there. Later repot the plant in a ceramic pot with lots of pebbles in the bottom (about 2" thick) so plant has better drainage.

Yes.....I am a nerd.....but in my defense, botanist are sexy 'cause we play hard in the dirt razz

It's time to become buddies with the neighborhood gay couple smile ....I know it's a bad stereotypical thing to say....but where I live those are the neighbors with the most pretty gardens ...and take the time to know what they are doing....not like my cousin Jose that's a sadist with a machete lol

Horatio....try pothos plants or bamboo....for a first time orchid, I recommend a lady's slipper (Paphiopedilum) and always buy flowering plants with the buds unopened.

I really need to learn how to post pictures pout
