I recently did some volunteer work at a Elderly Care Facility.
I sat and spoke with a lady 94 years old, she invited me into her quarters. It was lovely, set up like a little apartment, full of her memories. She was robust, and lively, and so full of stories. Another, loved to be outdoors so we took a walk by the flowers, and you could see the peace in her eyes. Another was a just a lady who loved music, and could jiggle her hips to the music. It was truly a lovely experience. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^
Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, it means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections... unknown

It was truly a lovely experience. I feel the same way. I light candles and meditate and offer flowers on the shrine with a woman from India with MS. She grabs the image of the goddess and kisses it with her lips. I help another woman write beautiful heartfelt letters to her kids about her life, and we discuss classical music.

heartbeatocean said: I love old people and actually seek their company often. My grandmother will be 99 in December. She has dementia and cannot remember who I am, but honestly, she is a very peaceful person, almost pure spirit at this point. I was missing her so I decided to volunteer at an home of elders near my house. This puts a lot of things into perspective. We are all a part of it and not separate from it. Life is impermanent, the body decays and we die. Why not accept this as part of the process? Taking care of other old people makes me feel that I, too, will be taken care of, even if I am 100% physically dependent on them. It is not shameful to grow old and lose our abilities, it is natural. The old people I work with are severely disabled -- they have Muscular Sclerosis, Parkinsons... They cannot speak or walk or eat. But they inspire me. No matter how disabled they are, they continue to have goals, to have interests, to be individuals. They have an amazing take on history, having experienced it themselves. They have wisdom.
If old age is so terrifying, I suggest you visit some old people and help them out. It's a great antidote to these fears. It helps you appreciate your youth and to accept your old age when it comes. Life and beauty are impermanent. Everything fades.
