Realizing the luxury of "Someday I'll get around to doing this, going there" et al. is no longer an option, simply for lack of enough time and health.

Irrelevance.

Nobody seems to care about old people, and more than that, they don't want to be reminded of what happens to all of us eventually, so they ignore them.

Not so bad? Then tell me how to defy gravity!!!! I mean at least I'll have boobs when I'm 60 but I'll need an implant to keep them from looking like pancakes.

Can't help you there darling!

I am starting my gravity pull, and hopefully I can take it like a lady with grace, and dignity.

My jowls are starting to sag but oh well.

I don't know, I look at both my grandmas in their 90s, and they are both doing OK, they look great still, they aren't fragile in the way one imagines frail old ladies. One actually got improved eyesight at the age of 96 and is suddenly doing crosswords again, with great fervour lol

I love old people and actually seek their company often. My grandmother will be 99 in December. She has dementia and cannot remember who I am, but honestly, she is a very peaceful person, almost pure spirit at this point. I was missing her so I decided to volunteer at an home of elders near my house. This puts a lot of things into perspective. We are all a part of it and not separate from it. Life is impermanent, the body decays and we die. Why not accept this as part of the process? Taking care of other old people makes me feel that I, too, will be taken care of, even if I am 100% physically dependent on them. It is not shameful to grow old and lose our abilities, it is natural. The old people I work with are severely disabled -- they have Muscular Sclerosis, Parkinsons... They cannot speak or walk or eat. But they inspire me. No matter how disabled they are, they continue to have goals, to have interests, to be individuals. They have an amazing take on history, having experienced it themselves. They have wisdom.

If old age is so terrifying, I suggest you visit some old people and help them out. It's a great antidote to these fears. It helps you appreciate your youth and to accept your old age when it comes. Life and beauty are impermanent. Everything fades.

yeah old people are just as happy & unhappy as the rest of us. Folks with dementia live in the moment and react more honestly to their surroundings than anyone except maybe children.

Still, working with people w/dementia hasn't stopped my fears of getting it. I guess the scary thing is seeing how hard it is on the people around them. Some take it better than others but most caregivers find it to be a really hard job, and not as rewarding as raising children, unfortunately.
