30 Days of Night!!! Anyone pumped up about this film? Anyone turned off by yet another comic-to-film adaptation? Anyone not care at all?

its weird-ive read graphic novels for 20 yrs and had never heard of it-good book?

I think it's kind of boring that they basically just seem to be vampires. It would have been more fun with a new type of creature, considering the relatively original setting of an arctic night.

Never read 'em myself, but I've only ever heard two substantive negative critiques of the book series: One had mostly to do with art that is sometimes so abstract, chaotic and blood-soaked that you can't quite discern what's going on. Another comment was that the resolution of the original story arch was a bit too "easy." I've heard the helter skelter look of the books will be tapped for the film, but hopefully they'll remedy any plot let-downs. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Yeah, these are "only" vampires, but they've tweaked them a bit, it seems. * They don't just have canine fangs, but a mouth full of sharklike teeth. * They aren't sexy, romantic and seductive; they're just ugly, ravenous eating machines! * They don't just neatly, politely suck your blood; they rip you to pieces, feasting on you! * With the exception of one or two, they don't speak, but rather scream, shrief and grunt in their own primal language (I think I read it will be subtitled * Because they don't have to contend with sunlight, keeping hidden, etc., they don't have to be stealthy. It's the humans that are hiding here. ...Geez, I'm such a geek. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I'm really excited for this and a little bit spooked as well. I tend to love all things vampire, but I have a hard time with really scary movies and gore. I'll probably be watching most of it from behind my coat. I didn't know about the comic it was based on, but I love the premise. |

I do hope they will have some kind of backstory though. Are they mutated humans? If so, how and why did that happen? Are they something entirely other than human? If so, why do they look so similar to humans? etc etc. To just throw in random monsters in a story just because they look cool makes it less scary, in my opinion.

Unfortunately from what I've read, that element may leave you disappointed. There's next to no backstory on the vamps. They just show up one day. We are told they're genuinely undead and I think one comment from the leader of the vamps in a pivotal scene will challenge the presence of God in all this. But aside from that, we aren't told whether they're of supernatural or scientific origin. There's a 7-episode mini prequel to the film running on www.fear.net that is laying a wee bit of back story. So far it's fair insofar as establishing a mood and suggesting the artic invasion has been looming for a long time with roots perhaps in New Orleans, but as of the 5th installment no real questions have been answered as to how the vamps began in the first place. I was really excited when I saw the trailer for it months ago in theaters, but these recent t.v trailers I've been seeing have lowered my interest. I'll still go see it. I need to check out the book. I do like the fact that they used Muse's "Apocalypse Please" in the trailer..... that song. There's just something about Josh Hartnett that seems to cheapen movies.....I don't know. I know I'm not the only one who feels that way about him. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

...and Danny Huston as chief vampire "Marlow," who was developed as a Spinoza-reading hater of humans and their notions of cheap grace and morality. (Hiin, you ought to LOVE this flick!
Apparently, they completely steal the show! [Edited 10/11/07 14:42pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I read the graphic novel a few years ago and agree that the ending was a bit of a cop out, but still really want to see the movie. I've also read most of the sequels, but there are so many additional related stories being published right now that I can't keep up any more.

The original graphic novel goes very briefly into how the vampires settled in Barrow. Then in one of the sequels there is a subplot about vampires making their way to Barrow on the anniversary of the original story. So there isn't a real prequel yet. I'm gettin' old.
