Glad to see Chico's fine.
Sorry Jennifer's not coming it's been rescheduled. Unfortunately the conventions scheduled for tomorrow are still happening as planned. I guess it's okay since those are taking place downtown. All schools closed til Friday. People in this city fantastic, Qualcomm is turning supplies and volunteers away cause they got more than they need, even with doctors and nurse, they came immediately. Don't worry they're being routed to other locations all over. Wind seems to be dying down somewhat and tempertures are dropping a bit making areas accessible. And some evacuees are being allowed to go home, though there as still areas being evacuated, due to oddly a new fire starting. Pres. Bush coming here Thursday. So I guess that's good. Somehow, I felt better with the Governor coming around, he looked like he took charge. So far only one death which was reported in the very beginning, due to excellent planning and fast action on a lot of people's part. The leadership here seems to be on point. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm impressed. All normal infrastructure stuff seems to be chugging along as normal. Trash pick up, mail delivery, libraries opened, trolley and buses running in all non-evacuated areas. Correcting big oops! edit [Edited 10/23/07 23:42pm]

Having lived in San Diego while in the Marines, I experienced something like this in 2003 and it was so scary. I just called a couple of my friends out there and one of them is doing fine.
My prayers go out to everyone in Southern California and those here in the org directly in the fires path or know people affected by this. Keep the faith. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

It's major news over here too. from across the pond, hope everyone is safe.
Arrowhead saddens me Karen, thats where we headed on the last day of the invasion, where I captured my butterfly shot. Such beautiful areas. I understand the peoples anxiety, but homes and materials are insured, as long as the folks are safe. However, we loose the wildlife forever. It is sick that these fires are started by fuckwhits with nothing better to do with their time. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

still bad but getting better.
and it's heart warming to hear that they are overwhelemed with volunteers and supplies and now just asking for monetary donations. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

My heart goes out to all the thousands of people who had to spend the night in shelters lastnight. When my house burned down in 1990, we spent the first few nights with family, then my wonderful boss (who I still work for) opened up his guesthouse for us to live in while our home was rebuilt. But in the case of these people, it is so overwhelming that it seems like everyone in town is in the same boat.

the fire has all ready gotten to outlying areas of the city. the central area still appears to be at least 5-10 miles away. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Oh here we go. Comparisons to Katrina debates begin. People here aren't landlocked (or waterlocked) so there is freedom of movement to get supplies in and out. Major difference. Heck if the citizenship could have gotten to those people too, the scene would have been very different.

OMG i just got back from visiting a friend of mine out in College he's just a mile or so from San Miguel Mountain, I live in North Park, and basically if they hadn't stopped the fire from scoming down San Miguel most of downtown would have been up in flames by now. I didn't realize how close it was!!! Thankfully things appear to be getting under control. My thoughts are with those San Diegians still in danger and those who have lost their homes. It is just bizarre to me that this fire has garnered more attention than the fire in 2003/2004, I think, where the entire southland was circled by fire. I have lived in California my whole life and I have NEVER seen the smoke like that. Even as close as the 2 fires are to me, the smoke is nothing like that year. The smoke was so bad you literally couldn't see past our yard across the street. I have never ever seen the smoke that bad. It was like fog. Maybe this is worse because more structures were destroyed? 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I was told today the fire is hotter than it was in 03 so the ash was finer and the smoker higher up in the atmosophere. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

First, this is post Katrina, so the nation is watching the Govt's response. Second, I don't remember so many people being displaced and so many structures/homes being destroyed in 2003/2004. Could just be because of the increased coverage...not sure. I'm firmly planted in denial
