California Tax Board Releases Biggest Tax Cheats - CELEBRITIES!!!! http://abclocal.go.com/kf...id=5710324
California Tax Board Releases Biggest Tax Cheats Some Celebrities On The List By Nannette Miranda SACRAMENTO, Oct. 17, 2007 (KGO) - More than 700,000 people and businesses haven't been paying their state taxes over the years, and the tab for those unpaid taxes is nearly $7 dollars. The state's Franchise Tax Board hopes the newly-published list shames the 250 worst tax cheats into paying their fair share. Nothing else seems to work. "It's those who, frankly, are opposed to the system, who are unwilling to come forward, are not trying to pay their taxes in good faith. So we wanted to make sure they get highlighted an they think about paying their taxes now," said State Controller (D) John Chiang. Topping the list is a retailer/manufacturer called Rapid-American, which owes $27 million dollars. Land and real estate company, Pacific Gateway Properties, has a nearly $14 million dollar tab and the individual owing the most is Waheed Begum with an almost $11 million bill. Celebrites also made the list. Singer Dionne Warwick owes more than $2.5 million dollars, comedian Sinbad's bill is $2.1 million dollars and O.J. Simpson owes $1.4 million dollars. Money the state desperately needs during a cool housing market. "If we were able to have everybody pay the taxes that they owed, we would have $6.5 billion more to spend or conversely, we wouldn't have to make $6.5 billion in budget cuts," said H.D. Palmer from the California Finance Department. Lawmakers bitterly fought for nearly two months this summer over which programs to cut. In the end, college students had to pay more for tuition. Public transit riders saw service cutbacks. "We the people that use these different types of state agencies have to suffer because they're not paying their fair share," said public transit driver Marlin Johnson. And county workers who help poor children sign up for subsidized healthcare are upset because tax cheats could have saved their now scaled back programs. "Knowing that there's families, even if there is only one or two children not able to afford health coverage, is very unfortunate," said County Outreach Manager Joil Xiong. The governor gave the Franchise Tax Board $19 million dollars more this year to hire chartered people who will aggressively go after the tax cheats For a complete list of California Tax cheaters, go to www.ftb.ca.gov. California ordered to pay interest on seized assets Wednesday, October 17, 2007 California taxpayers are on the hook for as much as $500 million in interest that a judge says the state owes to thousands of property owners whose assets were taken into trust under a troubled state program that manages abandoned property, officials acknowledged Tuesday. A federal judge in San Jose ordered state officials last week to begin paying interest to property owners whose assets were returned after being held in the state's unclaimed property program. The ruling overturned a 2003 law that had halted interest payments. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi...OSR0ON.DTL a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on | |
