Hi there i'm not an org regular but know a few of U

i'm on my way to Europe soon and would love some ideas of spots to hit while i'm there. i'd like to hit some local places and truly get the vibe of it all. i'll be in Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam.

all suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

To answer your question:

I have only been to Amsterdam and it is a wonderful city. I didn't particularly care for the Red Light District but i think you should check it out since amsterdam is famous for it.


Since I know you love art, please visit the Van Gogh and Rembrandt museums. Amsterdam has beautiful architecture and the history of the city is amazing.

From Frankfurt, get on a train and head to Kaiserslaughtern.

From K-town, rent a car to a town called Gundersweiler (about a 20 minute drive)


Go party at a place called the Kult Rockclub.

The town is a small, one horse town, surrounded by green hills. The Kult Rockclub is situated behind an old house and barn and is absolutely packed on Saturday nights

You get all types (preps, Goths, older folks, and metalheads), and the music is an extremely eclectic mix of 60's rock, new techno, dark wave "alternative", gothic, and biker rock).
After a good night out at the Kult, drive a bit up north (about 10 to 15 minutes) to a town called Falkenstein, and park on the hill by the castle overlooking the tiny town, and count the falling stars. It's so dark up there that you can count every star in the sky, and the old ruins has a quaint little patio that overlooks the tiny gingerbread town below it. I can't stress enough how quirky and magical such a night is.

truly sounds fabluous... just the kind of vibe i dig... love haning with locals when i travel. and i love to gaze at the stars... i'm taking a day to sight see there before heading on to Paris and castles are a must.

Don't miss Versailles, if you're in Paris. Don't accidently touch anything! No leaning against the wall, door jams etc. I think it's a descendant of the Hapsburgs who gives the tour....The red table wine at any resturant on the street is excellant and cheap. As is the food. (or was)
The beer is great in Germany. If you have a chance, go to a beer hall. Wine tasting along the Rhine is fun. The food is delicious if you eat meat. Game meat with condiments such as fruit compote, etc. I LOVED Heidelberg.

It's not a "local" type of place but I adore the Rodin Musée in Paris. A lot of the sculptures are outside in the garden with rose bushes and you can see the gold dome of Les Invalides. It was my favorite museum in Paris. I went in October and the weather was still nice so the garden should still be open.

I don't know how much longer you stay in the city but here are a few things to do.

Even if Le Musée du Louvre is without a doubt one the most oustanding museum in the world, most of the time, it's definitely too crowded. I'd prefer Le Musée d'Orsay or the brand new Musée du Quai Branly dedicated to ancestral cultures and which is really amazing. Le Musée Rodin worth also a view. At the Grand Palais, there is also very often many expositions dedicated to any kind of arts.

You can also visit a place in Paris called La Butte aux Cailles. It's a kind of village inside Paris with typical houses and shops. This place is relatively unknown

Montmartre and Le Sacré Coeur is a must see, like the cemetey of Père Lachaise. If you want to enjoy a drink, i'd say Le Marais area, called here the gay Paris. Very friendly bars and restaurants.

Another interesting thing to do and out of the cliché of the glamorous Paris, you can visit the catacombs and the sewers. The entrance is just close the underground station called Denfert-Rochereau.

Le Cab is a cool and hype club to enjoy night life and if you really have time, like xplnyrslf said, le Château de Versailles worth any blinking.

Make sure that you find out exchange rates: whether it's cheaper to change money here or just go to an ATM while you're overseas.

Overall, Paris, specifically the region where the the two museums are stretching up the Champs Elyese (sp?) are awesome just to walk and look. Albeit the Champs Elyese'(sp?) is crowded as hell and a bit seedy at night if you ask me.


Paris is just damned gorgeous at night though. I mean, stunning.
