I was 39 when I went back for my master's degree. I found that this time around I was more serious about the "learning" then actually getting the degree. It was very hard for me but well worth it. I decided to go back for something I love. I had been thinking of grad school for about 7 years and when we moved to the area and they had a good program I got in. So first thing really is decide on the school. Look for money and then decide on the area you want to study. You can apply to the school and then once you get in declare, even if it's grad school good luck We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. there's usually at least one older student in my classes, and i think it's cool. the only time it gets annoying is when someone thinks that because they're older it automatically means they know more than the younger students and talk over their opinions.

I didn't think it would put me off either, but it kind of did. They're so annoying. Plus it made me feel like I was redoing my past, and that's never a good feeling. Like I said though, as long as you avoid the entry level courses you'e usually in the clear anyway. What is wrong with change though? I feel it is very healthy. I certainly wouldn't see it as going back on ones self. [Edited 10/12/07 11:23am] Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.

Lammastide said: My favorite cohort was a 78-year-old man who earned a Ph.D. in forestry in the mid 1950s. He'd worked for the Canadian government and had been retired for almost two decades when he came to my school last January for another advanced degree in theology. He absolutely ILLUMINATED the place! His life experience, his paternal nurturing instinct toward us younger folk, his zeal in simply being back in action and part of a learning community was priceless. He brought at least as much to my education as what I've learned in the classroom -- and I think he got a lot out of how much we valued him and could teach him about values, etc., of a younger generation.
He passed away in July, but I will always feel blessed to have briefly studied beside him. You should TOTALLY do this! I have so much respect for people like this. What a truly great story, thank you. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.

I hope you put her/him in their place though. We all have opinions, and are all entitled to them no matter what age we are. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.

When I took classes with fewer teenagers that felt a lot better though. More like a fresh new thing.

That's great, Ivy! Money's the main thing that's kept me back these past few years. I hired someone to look up every possible scholarship available to me, and I fill out my FAFSA each year, applying to all grants and our local BOG waiver. I got the BOG last year, but they changed the income requirements and now I receive no assistance whatsoever. It's really challenging. I couldn't afford to take all the classes I need this semester. You deserve it! A scholarship is well worth the effort. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

Like I said though, as long as you avoid the entry level courses you'e usually in the clear anyway. It's really two different atmospheres, understandably. Having a classroom full of 19-year-olds is GOING to be different than one of 30+ students. While I prefer the latter, the only drawback are the 'mature" students' need to speak up whenever possible about their own life experiences, and challenge the teacher in ways I deem a bit inappropriate. In an extreme case, I've got most of my classmates in a humanities class trying to get our professor fired because of her 'biased' teaching. Because her teaching styles are a bit different and because she's not holding their hand the entire way, they want to see her canned. I'm doing everything I can to save her reputation with the board of our weekend program--she's incredible. Their fear of a more 'independent' learning style has seriously cramped their ability to see what she's doing for us: preparing us for grad school. The worst part is that they're using her ethnicity and her personal studies/contributions (in addition to the textbook, as it doesn't cover minorities' roles in postmodern art history) as a reason to see her fired. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

Has anyone done this as a mature student? Any advice, please? Same here, I'm sick of my current career, and ready for a change. I need to figure out what to go into though, that's where I'm having trouble. The areas that I'm interested in don't pay much. My attitude is, if I'm going to take the time and spend the money to go to school, I want to make a decent salary. Otherwise, it will just not be worth it to me. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
