Park Cameras

FLORENCE,SC- Police said there has been more than children playing at a Florence park, and now they're taking action.

After complaints of lewd activities going on at Jeffries Creek Park, Florence Police have installed multiple motion-sensing cameras.

Jeffries Creek Park was part of the reason Fred Sankuer and his family moved to his Florence neighborhood, but now it's a place they avoid.

"Up to this point because of the rumors we've heard about the park we will not let our children go unsupervised to the park," Sankuer said.

Police said rumors of lewd activity are true.

"In the middle of the day people coming out here meeting, engaging in activity that's just disgusting to be honest with you. It shouldn't happen. Nobody should have to come up here, walk up on something like that," said Florence Police Chief Anson Shells.

As a result, police placed multiple cameras in the park.

While some cameras are hidden, police still want everyone to know that they're there, that way people come to the park for the right reasons.

"If you think you're gonna move one of these cameras around and we're not gonna get a picture of you then you're much fooled," Shells said.

Police say the pictures produced by the cameras clearly define everyone including those committing crimes.

Police hope families like Sankuer's will be able to enjoy the park the way it was intended.

"I think it's encouraging and we'll probably revisit the park given the fact there will be cameras up and have a sense of safety there," Sankuer said.

Since the cameras have been installed at Jeffries Creek Park, police said they've noticed a decrease in lewd activities.

Florence Police said they're considering putting cameras at other parks within the city as well.
