Slang I've been looking at urbandictionary.com and thinking about a couple of conversations I have had in the last week and was wondering, are there any slang words or phrases that you use in your every day life?
Here are some that I overuse 1. Mad: Most predominantly used in the greater New York area, "mad" is an appropriate replacement for Northern California's "hella" and Boston's "wicked." In the common vernacular, it translates into "a lot" or "extremely." Can be used almost interchangeably with any of the above listed words. For the most part, it means angry. It's mad hot today. She has mad problems. 2. Yo: 1) A contraction of the possessive adjective "your." 2) An informal address or title to one whose name is not known to another; can be used as an interrogative address. 3)A declarative or imperative exclamation, whether alone or within a sentence. 1) How's yo momma? 2) Hey, yo! What's up, yo? 3) Yo! What the hell do you think you are doing?! Yo, just do your job! YO! 3. nahmsayin: "Know What I'm Saying?" I was at the movies, nahmsayin 4. Brick: Very cold. What about you?

How could I forget this one?
That's how I roll : What someone would say to insinuate that it was their style, or that it was the way they usually do things. And also Der: usually said when you already knew what one person is talking about or totally obvious. also said in place of "duh!", "no shit!", "really (note the sarcasim)?" or "well, no kidding!"

Hater/Hating
A person that simply cannot be happy for another person's success. So rather than be happy they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person. Hating, the result of being a hater, is not exactly jealousy. The hater doesnt really want to be the person he or she hates, rather the hater wants to knock somelse down a notch. Susan: You know, Kevin from accounting is doing very well. He just bought a house in a very nice part of town. Jane (hater): If he is doing so well why does he drive that '89 Taurus? I use the word hater a lot. Dont be a Hater!! "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

Here's one for Karma
Right on: 1. A positive response. 2. "Yeah, whatever." 1. You passed your class? Right on! 2. Person1: Wanna go to Denny's? Person2: Right on.

If I had a penny for every time my kids used the word "like" without meaning "as if", I could pay for their hoped-for Ivy League educations.

Ex-Moderator | I rarely use any kind of slang. And when I do it's usually meant to be ironic. I just have to be careful about using certain words or phrases too much as they'll creep into other conversation where I wouldn't normally use it and then I feel silly. |
