Just had a chat with the Surveyor for a new house we are buying. I was expecting, the usual, comments like the roof leaks, cellar is a bit damp, some of the eaves may need replacing, bathroom needs updating. I was not expecting him to tell me that there is a medieval burial ground in the back garden!

It’s an old house but shit me!! Apparently used to be the site of the local church pre 14th Century and during foundation work next door they found human remains. Some of which extend to (and beyond) the boundary with the property we are buying, ie the back garden.

I can’t get the image of the swimming pool at the end of Poltergeist out of my mind shakeboxed

Plus side, do you think this is worth renegotiating the offer price? lol

I'd want a little more evidence. Get a shovel, go out, and start digging around..... smile

Pre 14th century, would be prior to 1300s. That's a long time for human remains to be around, unless it's special soil/climate.
If you're going to renegotiate your contract, get hard facts. Is there a local university with an archeology department that could be of help?

Big deal.rolleyes The place where I live was once the site where "witches" were burned and beggars were burried alive.

Honest!

That's how it looks today.

No, I'm actually the owner of this part of Warsaw. hmph!

Okay. I don't live inside the wall, but this is where I walk my dog.
My small way of paying homage to the buried.

There's nothing to dig up. It must be based on documents that a cemetary existed. (With mummies, they were imbalmed, preserved with climate, and above the ground environment.)
The rest of us are excrement of worms and bugs. Which is why I'm an organ donor, leftovers donated to biology classes to dissect, and want anything else to be cremated....

I think I would be freaked by it a little bit. Sometimes I wake up in the middle on the night and am convinced that someone is in the house. I build up the courage to go and investigate with my trusty flick knife in my hand. if I lived there I would be more inclined to walk around with holy water in my hand giggle

Am sure it will be fine. Are you moving far?

I don't believe in priests.

I wouldn't mind if the ground next door hadn't been disturbed. The remains are being moved and reburied I believe. I just hope they don't leave some poor sods torso in my garden and take his legs because he had the misfortune to be buried spanning the boundary confused

Why?

It's no big deal at all, but you might be able to get your price reduced (because of people who think like Luv). lol

I did toy with idea, but there are more pressing issues that will put us off like £ for refirbishment. I actually quite like the idea like emm said

cool ... i think it's kind of neat.
centuries of civilization no matter where you tread but you have a bit of history right there smile

now, the house cool how old is the house? mine was built in 1940 and considered old around these parts falloff

falloff

They belive that the main (middle) part of the house is around 1450, although with the latest findings it could be older. Somewhere btween 500-600 years old. Most of the refirbishemnt is Georgian (Early 17 hundreds to early 18 hundreds). Surprisingly this is the stuff with the problems, new builders eh? lol
