So... if I could get a D80 with the standard 18-55 lens they usually put it with, a bag, a memory card and warranty for around $1500 Aus that'd be pretty good? I'm thinking if I get my compensation money from the building society's screw-ups I'll stretch to about 43,000 baht if this camera's worth it, instead of paying 25,000 for the D40x. Is it intuitive? I've not had a DSLR before, as I said, and never owned any Nikon. I reckon that would be a pretty good price and you would probably be able to get it cheaper still, being in Thailand and all. I looked at eBay, and the ones there which are much cheaper, don't have an Australian warranty, which means sending overseas to fix. I don't remember how it was using an SLR the first time (I've always had one since 1989) but it sure is better seeing what you get through the viewfinder. It comes with a good used guide though.

I'm hoping I can get the very lowest price but then convince them to throw in some goodies like a decent memory card and spare battery. Funnily enough, at least once a week we get people calling us thinking they're getting through to the Nikon service centre. It's probably not a good sign. I'll buy the camera and then when I try to call Nikon I'll be coming to myself for assistance. I got my old SLR in about '94 or '95 and used it for about 3 or 4 years before basically quitting photography until around 2 or 3 years ago. I pretty much forgot all but the basics and still haven't caught up. That's why I have the crappy Olympus and 80% of the time use the 'auto' settings. I'm a bit daunted about getting back into it properly again. I want to though. . [Edited 9/22/07 1:51am]

I have a feeling that if I get it I'll wish I had spent a bit more, but the D80 is still out of my range. I looked at the D40, but the lens I was getting was way heavier than the body of the camera, it seems flimsy and hollow (in comparison to the D80), and is a step down from the D50 featurewise, I got the D80 I have a D50 for sale though it's a great camera, very robust comes with 2 lenses: 18-55, and 70-300, bag that fits the lot, and spare battery! I'll give you $200 and a naked picture of me

Oh honey! I've never lost any of my sunglasses, but I'm feelin your pain! I have a sunglass fetish also! You don't have to justify that expense to me as I've spent big money on them too- mostly Versace, Gucci and Fendi. Socks still got butt like a leather seat...

The Taylor 514ce. Usually sells for around $1,400 or so. I haven't checked it out in about 5 years. I wound up going for another guitar for half the price. I haven't been disappointed. But I think from time to time about how nice it could have been...

Well, I'm a cheap bitch so spending $120 on my last pair of sunglasses hurt like hell BUT I don't wear them often enough to justify the cost. If you love them, will use them & work hard for them then don't you dare feel bad about the purchase! I have too many $100+ pairs of jeans in the closet (that I can't justify) to fault you for it
But if you leave these somewhere you need an asskickin'! . [Edited 9/22/07 7:55am]

I wouldn't drop $400+ on sunglasses, but I would spend that kind of coin on a pair of shoes, so I say don't worry about it. Enjoy! a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

I spent ridiculous amounts of money on (among many other things) a Bang & Olufsen phone, a Sony flatscreen, a stay at the Chateau Marmont, an overpriced bed, an Eames couch, one of these: my condo, my car, these boots for my girlfriend: suits, personal trainers... You name it, I overspent on it. My days of spending on status symbols are done. I'm trying to strip myself of as many possessions as possible. I'm all about the Zen, these days. Of course, because you've done the opposite already. You can do what us poor folks do out of necessity purely for a change. It's not about trying something "for a change"; it's about an awakening. Of course, my awakening allows for the purchase of a new HDD DVD recorder, but that's a necessity to me.

I think it's quite alright to spoil yourself once in a while.
I've only reall spoiled myself 2x on semi extravangant things. I bought a Versace jacket, that I never wear, a while ago. The other thing was a D&G belt that I've had forever. I just had to have it. I think if you have the money for them and want them then buy them. No need to justify to anyone. If I was single and had the money I'd be buying all sorts of stuff.
I went to a Coach store the other day and saw a beautiful bag, but I can't justify spending $400 on it, but I would if I was single. However, I AM buying a pair of Christian Louboutin heels before I die. That is a promise!

You had the last pair for 3 years and if you really love them, then don't sweat it. Everyone has their weakness that they splurge on.
Did you report them as lost? Maybe someone did turn them in to Lost & Found. Also, just because someone goes to an Ivy League school doesn't mean they're loaded or their parents are footing the bill--especially if it's grad school... I know I'm not and my parent's didn't.
