Prince at Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama, January 18, 1997. The concert was general admission, and I snagged a spot in the front row by waiting outside the venue all day.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

It was either Depeche Mode or Howard Jones, saw them both at the Hammersmith Apollo in 1984 but I can't remember which was first.
Some people are like Slinkies...

They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Okay fine. I give in. At the risk of ruining my pristine musical reputation I offer this information reluctantly. My cousins had box seats at the time to the Palace (one of the big Detroit arenas). Much of my family is conservative and Christian. A lot of "secular" music was frowned on. They invited me to an Amy Grant show when I was about 11. Of course I went cuz it felt cool to hang out with my older cousins at the time. But I stayed in the inside part, ate pizza, and watched TV the whole time. I don't remember anything about the show itself. So there ya go. Happy now!?

Oh...that wasn't so bad! I, too grew up with Amy Grant in the house, so I can relate. (My family's fucked, on heavy rotation in one year at my house was Prince, Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, Amy Grant and Dolly Parton)

Just so you don't feel so bad, I BOUGHT tix to a Johnny Mathis Xmas show a few years ago! Of course, we were taking my mom as a Xmas gift, but I actually sat and watched that show!

The first concert I went to was INXS in Ahoy Rotterdam in '88. Next was LoveSexy in de Kuip Rotterdam. And in the same year I went to Lenny in, again, Ahoy... yeah, it was a fine year!

Thanks for going easy on me. wink My mom used to love Johnny Mathis too! That's a pretty cool mix you had going there. What year was that?

must've been about 86-87...my middle sister was "finding herself" in 9th grade and would go one week from dying her hair with kool-aid and listenin to the Sex PIstols and the Surf Punks to the next week taking out all her earrings and joining church groups...ahhh adolescence! biggrin

At least she introduced me to A LOT of cool music!

ps..I thinks mom's HAVE to love Johnny Mathis...I never saw so many hyper gray haired women as at his show (well, maybe there were more at Kenny Rogers but, whatevs)

My first concert ever was Public Enemy at First Avenue in '89. It was so bizarre that I was all into rap for a minute cause at the same time I was listening to mainly the Cure, Love and Rockets, Depeche Mode, that sort of thing. But there I was at the P.E. show. It was the Fear of a Black Planet tour.

stupid type-oh...

But why?? It's just so bizarre. And so unlike me, really. Although I still like my old P.E. tapes. And a few others. But that's it, I promise.

yeah sure. wink

I dunno, I just like it. Especially the idea of it being your first concert. It's so hardcore for a 13 year old. And it does clash with the other stuff you were listening to. Same thing happened to me. I was listening to The Cure yet my family wanted me to go to an Amy Grant concert- so far removed from my own taste. I think that's all my mom would've allowed me to go see at that point anyway.

See, that's what your problem was! wink I just didn't tell them what I was doing. All ages shows at First Ave were traditionally held in the early evening, like 4 or 5 even, so I'd still be home and in bed at a decent hour. Arena shows are a different story though.

I did sneak out to the Girlie Show under the pretenses that I was doing an out of town research project with one of my best friends. I didn't get home til like 2 or 3 but my parents just thought I was studying extra hard. wink

Would you believe it? I got four free tickets in 1984 to see Weird Al Yankovich at the former Front Row in Cleveland.
I was interning one day a week at the "new" lite rock station WLTF 106.5 FM in Cleveland and the promotions department offered tickets to go see the Boston Pops at Blossom Music Center. I said forget about that and instead wondered if they could get tickets to go see Weird Al who was playing the same night. lol
...so I got the tickets...and took my dad, my sister and my first summer fling.

My first Prince concert was Oct, 1988 LoveSexy tour in Pittsburgh at The Igloo.

Matchbox 20, Concord Pavilion, 1998.

I won lawn tickets off of the now defunct Z 95.7 by being the 20th caller on Labor Day weekend.

Took my best friend with me, as I really won them for her... smelled pot for the first time... from that moment on I have always dug live music. It was great.
I mean, like, where is the sun?
