I've stopped going to most of the western chains. I mean, it costs about $8 for the meal I like to order in Burger King. I could take the whole family out for noodle soup on that. A large Pizza Hut pizza is a night in a hotel. When I go past KFC I'll see about 3 or 4 Thai people at a table sharing one small fries, 3 pieces of chicken and a couple of Cokes. They so want to believe that if they can eat in KFC then they and Thailand has really arrived. I like to just eat nice, big meals locally now if I feel like treating myself. The home comfort aspect of the western chains just doesn't do anything for me anymore.

it was in the largest area of San Diego without a Starbucks, that has since changed and there are 4 within walking distance of CDL.

Since they moved in the indie shops business has picked up, but that is because they neighbor loves it's indie shops.

many indie shops have a love/hate relationship. Hate their business practices but love that Starbucks introduces people to the world of gourmet coffee and sometimes SB people wander and create new customers because they discover better coffee.

Ive never been to one!....ive heard they were insanely expensive though? here in ontario, we have a timmies on every block....(almosT)

Good question. I have always wondered that myself. I heard it was evil, so I stayed away. But then countless hip and cool filmmaker/artist types, would say to me: "Why don't we meet at Starbucks?" So I just sort of bit my tongue, thinking: "But are they not evil?" Being a conflict avoider, I said nothing. But since I rarely ever drink coffee, the issue does not come up often. And since I believe my hip and cool filmmaker/artists friends can do no wrong, I am left in an ethical quandary, much like yourself.
