Santorini....FIRA....... Hi All
...I'm not long back from a weeks break on the amazing Greek island of Santorini. ...It was a great time apart from 3 days or so of travellers tummy bug ...Nevertheless I still managed to grab some pictures to share ...As aword of explanation for those who don't know Santorini is an island which is formed from the remnants of a volcano which erupted big style around 3600 years ago... ...It was the largest known eruption on the planet to date ...The towns on the island are actally built on the edge of the rim of what is now a sunken crater or caldera... and some believe the explosion led to the submergence of Atlantis... which is thought to lay in the caldera. ...Since the huge eruption a new volcanic cone has emerged from the sunken crater i the middle of the aldera... this volcano is still active. Right ... that's a brief history which might help explain some of the pictures coming up... ...As the title suggests... these are taken in Firaas idicated on the map... more will follow of other towns in time ...Enjoy

I'm very jealous.
I went through a phase about 4 years ago when I was Atlantis obsessed. There's a wonderful book about the volcanic eruption and the digs called Unearthing Atlantis by Charles Pellegrino. It's a fairly quick read, and not text-bookish at all! This one's for you.

You're welcome! ...There will be more coming up in the next day or so ...I didn't come across anything regarding codes for the appearance of buildings though... all I know in that respect is that there are several barrel vaulted buildings now to counter any earthquakes after the island was shook in the 1950s... the town we stayed in was devastated then.

There are several digs around the Island... ...Unfortunately my little spell of illness prevented me from getting to them this time around, but hopefully I will return.

I'm guessing that one of the Building Codes is "Put it on a hill and paint it white".

I'm not sure what temp it is in December... the locals say it is cold, but cold to them will be warm for us I suppose... ...Late September or Early May June seem to offer decent weather for a lower price... ...I would suggest Kamari just up the road... ...There's more going on there and the beach is Hot... too hot to walk on in bare feet.. When the sun is out that is. ...It's definately a must visit island

Excellent, excellent. This place looks flawless... flawless for taking photos too. Hell, if I ever go... I am putting the camera away. No time to waste on such visual perfection. But thank you Steadwood. My gosh!

Yes... It's pretty hard to take a bad or boring photograph here... ...and yes... I had to purposefully leave the camera behind on occassions After seeing the vegetable salad, I had to fix some lunch. Got hungry all of a sudden. Then I ate it outside on my new finish patio area. Just finished it this morning. More to do... but I pretended I was sitting in Santorini FIRA, , a girl can dream ya know. I am a fond believer in dreams can and do come true.

That is a "Crete Salad" with a "Santorini Sunrise" (fruit drink... not a cocktail ) ...They seem to take great pride in their food too ... well... most of them do ...Without dreams what is there to aim for?
