Org Book Review

The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists

So I'm going to go ahead and assume that just about everyone here has seen at least one episode of VH1's The Pick Up Artist. I've seen a couple of episodes and while I liked the show I haven't made it a priority to sit my butt down and watch every week.

BUT... while browsing through Barnes and Nobles I came across this book:

It's written by a guy who has ghost written a bunch of books for rockstars and such and it chronicles his rise from nerdy shy writer to one of the best pick up artists in the world, while under the guru Mystery's care.

It starts off with him lurking, then posting on a pick up artist message board, meeting up and eventually moving in with his fellow posters.

When they create their version of "The Org House" every thing goes to shit...it only gets worse when Courtney Love moves in.

I swear everything that goes down with these dorks is what would happen if orgers ever got motivated and finally built our utopia. lol

With crazy cameos by Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Heidi Fleiss, and more, this book kept me laughing all the way through.

The best part is it's a true story!

If you love/hate the Org, you will adore this book!

Post your own book review, I need to find some interesting stuff to read!

I've heard that lots of guys use that book as kind of a handbook for how to pick up women, and that the method is basically to act like a total jerk. On your description it sounds more like a collection of celebrity gossip though. hmmm

hint: acting like a total jerk doesn't work with all of us.

And I'm really happy for that. hug

I do get a bit disillusioned sometimes though. Women seem to go for jerks just as much as men go for living barbie dolls. Either that or money. Or both.

The book is mostly about the author's PERSONAL journey, there are some "tricks of the trade" but I wouldn't call in a handbook in anyway. lol

I'm getting Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild in an hour or so. I've been meaning to read it for awhile but put it off for some reason. Has anyone read it? Into Thin Air was fantastic, so I'm assuming this one is too. nod

they're both non-fiction. Into the Wild's about a successful college graduate who disappeared into Alaska to live off the land and was found dead later. Into Thin Air is about the 1996 mountaineering disasters on Mt. Everest. smile

Oh wait I think I did read the second one.... long time ago. hmmm

I'm not big on non fiction but if it's the book I'm thinking of it was good. nod

It was a movie too right?

I have to make time to do it. I give myself daily quotas, either pages or time. That doesn't always make for the best or the most attentive reading, but since reading really is a skill that can always be developed, it does serve a purpose; so the when there's something that I need to read, for whatever reason, I am better equipped for it.

It's sometimes hard to know what kind of committment you're in for when you sit down to read a book.

I just finished The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle

It's about a couple that moves illegally to the US from Mexico and lived in the woods while trying to find work and avoid "La Migra."

Also about a wealthy American couple who come into contact with them, along with other undocumented workers in their neighborhood.

Every page was more horrible than the one before it, and I couldn't wait to get back to it and read some more! It reminded me of Barbara Kingsolver at times. TC Boyle can be funny, but this book wasn't.

It's a timely subject matter here in California, but not only relevant to people in CA or even the US. It was a very interesting & moving book.

The last book I read for book club was The Other Boleyn Girl. It is "historical" fiction about Mary Boleyn, who was Henry VIII mistress while he was married to Catherine of Aragon. Mary was the sister of Anne Boleyn who was Henry's 2nd wife and the first one he beheaded. You don't really have to know anything about English royalty, Henry VIII, etc to enjoy it. A good "beach" read.

But the book I'm currently (re)reading is Susan Sontag's Regarding the Pain of Others. It discusses the prevelence in the modern world of being able to see photographic images of "horrors taking place throughout the world" and whether our perception of reality is skewed by being able to view the pain of others throughout the world. It examines the photo images from Abu Ghraib, southern lynchings, Nazi concentration camps, Goya's etchings The Disasters of War, etc.
"Your presence and dry wit are appealing in a mysterious way."

exclaim Haven't read Into Thin Air since high school (I was laminating thirty of them for my English teacher and stole a copy). smile Let us know about Into the Wild, if you remember.

Finite and Infinite Games, by James P. Carse, has been staring at me for a week. It's next.

The two I have lined up after that are The Lucifer Principle: A Scientific Expedition into the Forces of History (Howard Bloom), and Monsters and Magical Sticks: or, There's No Such Thing As Hypnosis (Steven Heller).

I also have to re-read Brave New World for a presentation soon.
Oh shit, my hat done fell off

I'm on a bit of a Walter Moseley tear. I just finished "White Butterfly," just started reading "Cinnamon Kiss."

For the uninitiated, Moseley wrote "Devil in a Blue Dress," and Denzel Washington starred in the film adaptation of that, as the series' protagonist, Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins.

Denzel's my favorite actor. So, it's fun to read a novel imagining him as Easy.

I read about this guy, he really is a weedy little nerd in big flashy sunglasses who claims he can get women do whatever he wants, using the backhanded compliment for example - isult her first to undermine her confidence, and then she will be so grateful he thinks she looks OK enought to boff
