it chronicles his rise from nerdy shy writer to one of the best pick up artists in the world, while under the guru Mystery's care.

One of the best among guys he was aware of who employ bullshit to try and pick up women, yes. As someone very astutely noted, that stuff tends to only work on airheads in nightclubs.

I haven't seen this show (I don't think it's on here), but they should show video of "Mystery" rolleyes during the suicidal episodes he had in the book.

What these guys learned how to do was hook-up with slightly-above-average-looking women with low self-esteem. And they sure seemed to get dumped quickly. lol

I've heard that lots of guys use that book as kind of a handbook for how to pick up women, and that the method is basically to act like a total jerk. On your description it sounds more like a collection of celebrity gossip though. hmmm

Nah, the celeb stuff (except for an extended nutty cameo by Courtney Love) is pretty much incidental. Strauss is a Rolling Stone writer and that's mostly why they figure.

Haven't read either...what are they about?

they're both non-fiction. Into the Wild's about a successful college graduate who disappeared into Alaska to live off the land and was found dead later. Into Thin Air is about the 1996 mountaineering disasters on Mt. Everest. smile

just saw a poster that this has been made into a film. Directed by Sean Penn...
