The fighting Irish...coach

Why is Charlie Weis still employed? They fired their last coach whom had a much better record than Charlie. What am I missing.

I am an Irish fan. I believe the team was wrong to fire Ty before he could groom his players. I believe Charlie Weis won with Ty's players. But the Irish would be worse off if they fired Charlie after 3 years.

The last 5 years have been a vicious cycle for ND. Davie was fired after 5 years, but Ty also won his first year with many of the players Davie recruited. Then he had a drop-off after he brought his own players in (Quinn, Smardzija (sp), Stovall, McKnight, Darius Walker, et al.) They took their lumps but got experience. Then Ty was fired, and Weis did with those players what Ty did with Davie's -- coached'em up and won with them. Now he's got some talented but inexperienced players that need experience.

The problem is, if you fire him now, or after the season, then you create a gap in recruiting. The new coach will be behind schedule, so his recruiting class will be thinner. It was that way for Ty and it was that way for Weis. So, when Weis' players cycle out, and his first class comes of age, it will be shallower and less talented, but most experienced. Then there'll be a drop off after year 3. What will you do, fire him?

The injustice done to Ty will be a black mark (pun intended) on Notre Dame for a long time. But firing Charlie will make matters worse.

Such as it is now . . . doh! doh! doh!
