Does anyone see a difference between something offending you and making you mad?

I define "offended" as "showing a lack of class, manners and/or sensitivity". If someone offends me, it doesn't necessarily make me mad but it does usually disgust me.

I understand the reason and its a valid reason. I'm on the fence about it. Like I said. I'm not easily offended and I don't feel it applies to me. And as someone else pointed out, its a part of out history (for lack of better term since its not exactly HISTORY if it still exists).

But I do feel like its counter productive to spell America like that. Its a shameful part of our 'history', and not something I would like the COUNTRY associated with.

I wonder what ppl from other countries think when they see it.....

Dani, but it's not just "history". It's about the state of the country now.

Psst. Thats what I wrote in the parenthesies ( ). lol

Exactly. That is exactly what I was going to type. I am extremely grateful we are not where we were 50 years ago but to act like racism is not a problem today or needs to be swept under the rug is irresponsible.

Yes, I saw that but I can't understand the logic of just not wanting it to be associated with your country (and mine too) when the simple fact remains that it is what it is. You can't pretend it isn't that way...and just saying that you don't want it to be like that is not enough.

That's what is really counter-productive.

This is all true.

Kinda like I saw in P & R today someone was on an anti abortion rant.

And someone else said.

Well how many children do you plan to adopt?

That really made me think. Its not good enough to just be against something, you have to DO something about it.

So basically Erin, your from Canada. You have knowledge of what goes on here, but when you think of America do you think of the MAJORITY of the country being racist?

I wonder if people in Germany are offended when someone calls their country "Nazitopia" or whatever...or if people in France are offended when they're called "surrender monkeys"?... hmmm

Yes. And I feel that there is racial tension between all the races. It's not just a black white issue.

And it's really not so different here. Intolerance seems to be more of a people problem than an American problem. It just seems so um....I dunno...intense there (to people like myself, who are not living in your country).

Right, the US is different mainly because of the sheer number of different cultures living here.

But I only mean that in reference to some of today's problems, I'm not talking about our illustrious past offenses, which is where I believe the term AmeriKKKa comes from.

Depends on how the individual defines the term "racist", I think...

No.

Canada is what it is as well. People have this really silly idea that Canada is all hippy and loving and wishy washy, etc. But really, racism is bad here too. In this country the racism is mostly between immigrants and non-immigrants (which is weird because most Canadians are immigrants - my family included), between natives and non-natives. It's more about a clash of cultures I guess.

I see it every single day.

Its everywhere, not just the U.S. and african americans are not the only victims of racism.
Its been on going since the days of Moses.
So what is anyone trying to say about it?
It seems to be just a fact of life.

Culture, nationality, race, gender, class...always something that we humans latch onto that we feel gives validity to whatever inner issues we're carrying around...some of them inherent, some of it learned thru environment. Just the stage we're at right now in our emotional and intellectual evolution as a race. I say we give ourselves another 300+ years...if we're still acting like knuckleheads I'm takin' names.

Seems humans make the mistake of thinking we've evolved mentally just because we have DVD players in our cars. But basically we're all still dumb animals. Maybe if we acknowledged that we could move on to some place better.

I chalk it up more to things like ending slavery, going to war to end the Holocaust, and passing civil rights legislation...

But DVD players are cool, too... thumbs up!

sure, those are good things. but I guess I'm saying that even though society has declared that "all men are equal," its clear that not all men think that way, even if they think they think that way.

Maybe if people would acknowledge their animal impulses (which in this case is to fear our differences) maybe we could move past it as individuals. Like I acknowledged that I have an impulse to smoke, and now I'm able to not do it.
