'Greek Wedding' Breaks Indie Records
Movie Beats 'Blair Witch Project'

The movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is now the most popular independent film of all time.

It made another $8.5 million over the weekend for a total of $148 million since its release.

That's $8 million more than the previous record holder, "The Blair Witch Project."


Originally a one-woman stage show written by the film's star Nia Vardalos, "Greek Wedding" was shot for just under $5 million.

"Greek Wedding" has benefited almost solely by a word-of-mouth following and very little marketing.

It opened in a handful of cities on the East Coast in April, and has steadily built its audience since then.
