The Wizard of Oz
I think in general I don't have a lot of respect for films that SHOULD be seen as a child but are instead seen 10 years later. You're a lot more critical of these types of movies. Oz is a fine example of this. I mean, like, where is the sun?

erm... isn't that the method of all fiction? erm... no. how is it not? the author decides the ending, and works the plot that way. There are many examples of fictional screenplays that don't violate the viewers intelligence the way that "The Usual Suspects," "The Game," "No Way Out," and numerous other films do. I should have emphasized the "arbitrarily" and "surprise ending" parts of my original comments. Did anyone really feel that it was plausible that Kevin Costner was revealed to be the Soviet spy at the movie's end. If you did, then this post makes no sense to you, I'm sure. For me, it was a cheap shot to create a "surprise" ending. In contrast to these films, there are other screenplays where the development of characters, their possible role in an unsolved event, and the unexpected climactic ending all fit into a seamless story. Some excellent examples like "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Fugitive" come to mind. In the best movies, the screenwriter and the director are accountable for the movies twists and turns. No cheap plot twists needed. In a lighter movie that illustrates this point, I groaned during the second Austin Powers movie when Vanessa was revealed to be a "fem-bot." Completely implausible and ridiculous, of course, but it fit with the tongue-in-cheek theme of the movie. There was another awkward logic-flaw in that movie involving time travel where he confronts himself. In that scene, he actually addresses the movie audience, saying "ignore this part because it doesn't make logical sense." It's fine with an Austin Powers movie, but it sucks when its supposed to be a serious drama that dismisses the reasoning capability of the audience. Does that help? I see what you're saying. Though there are movies with twist endings that you don't necessarily see coming that can be pulled off well. Such as "The Sixth Sense" the first time you see it. And perhaps "Unbreakable." I thought so anyway. I agree about some of the other examples you gave though.

And it's about not conforming to society - breaking out and rebelling for the sake of living - at least for a day. Besides, it's funny, too.

Here I go, The Boat hit an iceberg, and sank. All the rich people lived and the poor people died. There I said it. What was James Cameron thinking. Moulin Rouge - what the hell was that shit? I cut it off after 15 minutes - I've never done that before.
Meet the Parents - I kept wondering when was it supposed to get funny and next thing I knew it was over. I think its one of those Yuppy films where only people in a certain income bracket finds it funny. Crouching Tiger - great effects, great fighting but dumb story and left feeling like you just had sex with someone you predicted to be a great lay and the shebangs just never happened. Something About Mary - again, I think it's one of those things like "Friends" you gotta be into those kinds of people to find them funny. These are probably the same kind of people who liked "Meet the Parents." Someone mentioned Prince films. I never found them to be overrated. It was like this silent expectation that they would be bad anyway and the only reason you would watch them was that you wanted to see Prince, so you were never disappointed. LQ

Mission Impossible movies are overrated.
Also I have come to dislike Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola.I saw it when I was akid and loved it but then I read the orginal masterpiece novel by Bram Stoker and thought the film had done no justice to the story. The novel was about Count Dracula coming to England and making vampires. There was no love story between Dracula and Mina Harker like in the movie, and no background about him being a Prince. I would love to see a real faithful film adaptation one day. [This message was edited Mon Oct 7 7:51:04 PDT 2002 by Biscuit] My name is BISCUIT...and I am funky!

or pretty much anything with John Cusack. Talk about different taste in movies. High Fidelity is one of my all time faves (hey it has a Beta Band song in it...just for that it makes it a great movie). But I love Cusack's movies except that one with Julie Roberts & Catherine Zeta Jones. C'Mon, Say Anything?, The Grifters?, Grosse Pointe Blank? Those are all classics. You also mentioned Almost Famous...man, I LOVE that one. Kate Hudson is so HOT in that movie. But overall I thought it was a good movie...kinda sappy, but good story, great acting. I just have to say that the scene on the bus with them signing "Tiny Dancer"...that happened with me on a bus ride home from Daytona Beach to Chicago when I was a freshman in college. The ride home was truly a trip from hell, we had a nazi bus driver who kept stopping the bus threatening to kick people off, the air conditioner broke, we drove into a snow storm in Indiana and the driver went to a rest stop for 5 hours until it let up. We were all hating each other...on each others nerves. We all were just wanting to get home. But just as we were approaching Chicago, "American Pie" by Don Mclean was on the radio and by the end of the song everyone was singing it (except the nazi). Finally, Speilberg rocks.
