okay...my confession time:
any fellini film (expecially 8 1/2 and with the exception of Setericon [sic?])...i just dont get the appeal of his films... Magnolia (this move was just a bore..with the exception of Julianne Moore's scenes...frogs?, the singing?, Tom Cruise earned an Oscar Nod for this?...lord) Rushmore (guess you gotta be a middle class white guy to enjoy this thang...cause i sure the heck didnt...) any and all Kevin Smith films already made or planned till the day he dies...this guys directing is stiff, the acting tends to be lazy...and it all comes off as sophmoric...im glad we have never seen the documentary of the celebration..it would have sucked too...

Now that I agree with! Dogma sucked ass! And Jay and Silent Bob are like a Saturday Night Live skit that got out of hand. (If that's not redundant to say.) And.....scene! [This message was edited Sun Oct 6 9:26:52 PDT 2002 by 2the9s]

But Cameron learns in the end that he must defend himself to his overbearing and insensitive father if he is to have any self-respect. And it's about not conforming to society - breaking out and rebelling for the sake of living - at least for a day. Besides, it's funny, too.
...getting off my soapbox... I love "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." I'm glad someone on this thread likes it, too. -------

two more i just thought of:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Moulin Rouge After seeing Dancer In The Dark I had high hopes for the musical...and while I will give Hedwig some koodos for attempting to tell a sweet story and for John Mitchell's performance...Moulin was just a mess of a film... both directors should have taken everything they learned from watching MTV and threw it away...and why oh why did Nicole Kidman get an Oscar Nod for Moulin when she was ten times better in The Other...her overacting ruined Moulin for me.. heres hoping 8 Woman and Chicago will restore the greatness that is due to the musical...

CITIZEN KANE is terribly overrated in my opinion. I liked it, but it was NOT the best movie ever made. There, I've said it. You're wrong, it is. Watch the DVD with Roger Ebert's commentary if you don't believe me. He'll make a believer out of you.

Yes, it seems overrated when it makes it to the very top of many "best ever" lists. I purchased the DVD and used the included separate audio commentaries by both Bogdanovich and Ebert. They break it down from a technical viewpoint, explaining a lot of the technical advances and innovations that make it an important film. Using these "aids," it's easier to understand it's "best ever" rating, but it still does not make my personal top ten list. "When they tell me 2 walk a straight line, I put on crooked shoes"

erm... isn't that the method of all fiction? erm... no. how is it not? the author decides the ending, and works the plot that way. There are many examples of fictional screenplays that don't violate the viewers intelligence the way that "The Usual Suspects," "The Game," "No Way Out," and numerous other films do. I should have emphasized the "arbitrarily" and "surprise ending" parts of my original comments. Did anyone really feel that it was plausible that Kevin Costner was revealed to be the Soviet spy at the movie's end. If you did, then this post makes no sense to you, I'm sure. For me, it was a cheap shot to create a "surprise" ending. In contrast to these films, there are other screenplays where the development of characters, their possible role in an unsolved event, and the unexpected climactic ending all fit into a seamless story. Some excellent examples like "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Fugitive" come to mind. In the best movies, the screenwriter and the director are accountable for the movies twists and turns. No cheap plot twists needed. In a lighter movie that illustrates this point, I groaned during the second Austin Powers movie when Vanessa was revealed to be a "fem-bot." Completely implausible and ridiculous, of course, but it fit with the tongue-in-cheek theme of the movie. There was another awkward logic-flaw in that movie involving time travel where he confronts himself. In that scene, he actually addresses the movie audience, saying "ignore this part because it doesn't make logical sense." It's fine with an Austin Powers movie, but it sucks when its supposed to be a serious drama that dismisses the reasoning capability of the audience. Does that help? I'm sure this will be a controversial opinion, but I think that "The Lord Of The Rings" is HUGELY overrated.
The first question that is usually asked by it's fans: Q: Did you read the book? A: No, was it necessary to judge the movie? For me, the movie was an agonizing marathon of a motley band of characters walking in single-file against computer generated scenic backdrops. This, coupled with the same basic battle sequences every 10 minutes left me bored STIFF. In my opinion, a great movie stands alone. It's greatness doesn't require that the viewer read the book, nor attach itself to the popularity of the book. Dune was another example of good book, lousy movie. Examples of great movies with great books that can be enjoyed independently: The Godfather, Silence of the Lambs, English Patient, and Jaws.
