Ok, I'm not crazy about anime, but I have a friend who is, and he's made me see quite a few of them.
The most praised and "mainstream" anime would have to be Akira. The animation techniques are really cool, really detailed, and to me the movie itself is really cool too, except the ending is really screwed up, which totally ruined it for me, and a lot of the voice work was poorly done. But before you get to the screwed up ending, there is some awesome action sequences, and a very visual, sound style. Plus, the DVD has an extraordinarily remastered soundtrack. Another very popular Anime is called Princess Mononoke. I thought this absolutely sucked, but many anime fans love it, so it's probably just me. The thing about this one though, is that if you watch the english version, the voice talent is really extraordinary. I can't remember all the famous people in this one, although I do know Gillian Anderson does one of them. To me, the be all and end all of the Anime genre is an awesome film called "Metropolis". This is the only Anime DVD in my collection, but it is a terrific movie. The work was based off of concepts of a now deceased anime legend, and directed, written, produced, by still living anime legends. This movie took four years to animate, uses Computer generated backgrounds, with traditional hand-drawn character animation. Some scenes have over 150 layers of cells on them!!! The story is pretty good too, about a world where class is measured by how high up one lives in a technologically advanced city called Metropolis. A new super-structure is created called the Ziggurat (which they paralell to the towers of babyl, which were struck down because the King of Babylon's arrogance angered the Gods). There is a great deal of political struggle in this movie, with a democratically elected leader of the city, a militant nut who uses his own funding to try to dethrone the leader, and a Proletariat movement representing the poor of the city. It's fairly complicated actually, but not difficult to follow. I strongly reccomend this movie to EVERYONE! The other thing about this movie is that IMO, the English acting is loads better than the original Japanese acting, so you can enjoy the movie looking at the atmosphere rather than reading subtitles. And speaking of atmosphere, the concepts were made in the '40s, so the futuristic visions are perspectives from the 40s. Therefore, all the characters wear old-fashioned clothes, robots have a campy value to them, and the music is inspired by New Orleans swing. The movie ends with a climactic scene set to Ray Charles' "I can't Stop Loving You". This is truly a piece of work not to be missed. Check out www.rottentomatoes.com for critic's opinions. Princess Mononoke rocks! I saw this when I was getting Stars free through my cable and was hooked. I went out and bought it right away. I love the look, the voice talent and the message.
I really loved the Aeon Flux series on MTV as well. | |
