I am noticing a trend on that, he must be losing his touch. I have Planet Earth on heavy rotation at home/car. But, I do agree he is changing alot. By that do you mean he's getting shit? No, he is music is not as easy to dance to as it use to be, it get's no air play, no video's etc.

I go through phases, though. I'm not a fan of planet earth or much of what he's put out the last 10 years or so. But it's all still amazing live. |

There are a couple of tracks that I really like, but overall, I find the album boring.

I'd say his last good album was Batman and it was in the year it came out, 1989, that I discovered Prince.
I was at a friends place who had all his albums, and the one I listened to first was Parade, and I was immediately hooked. Listening to Sign Of The Times a few weeks later is the most powerful music-related memory I have, it was simply amazing. I think my excitement started to subside already by the time Diamonds and Pearls came out though, and when it was time for the Symbol album I realized that his glory days were definitely over. In later years I've only been impressed by individual songs, and much to my surprise I quite enjoyed The Rainbow Children but other than that I've been totally unimpressed by his studio output (Planet Earth was a fucking mess) and barely listened to any of the albums more than once. He's still fantastic live though, and I won't stop hoping that he will one day drop another killer album on us when we least expect it. So does this make me a fan? A non-fan? A casual fan? You tell me...

I'm a huge fan, but the last three albums haven't grabbed me that much. I kind of forced myself to like Emancipation by listening to it a million times, but The Rainbow Children genuiely kept my interest.
Like Retina I kind of thought he'd sold himself with Diamonds & Pearls, and I think that was the end, even though he did some great stuff after. PE is okay, I like that it's melodic, but in the end it's probably not any better than 3121 or Musicology. Maybe this is the end of the trilogy and he'll do something different next record. But live, Prince still kicks ass, splits or no splits. Much of that is due to the incredible arrangements, band, old songs, and crowd energy. But Prince still knows how to ride that wave as well as anyone. My Legacy

I think I'm in line with alot of Prince fans when I say this:
I was a much bigger Prince fan 7 or 8 years ago, during the begginning (or middle depending on your tastes and point-of-view) of his career lull. About 3 or 4 years ago, I joined the org and started posting regularly. I eventually bored of the Music & More forum and found that General Discussion both suited my mood and personality better. It became so much a routine for me that it's like "TV time" to me. But during this entire period, my Prince "fandom" has been steadily declining. I haven't seen him in concert for years, and could never imagine myself sitting in a hot line waiting hours to aquire a ticket to see one of his shows--it would just not be worth the bother for me to watch Prince run through jazzed up, shorttenned versions of the his greatest hits, most of which aren't particularly my favorite Prince tunes played live, let alone in general. Also, his preachy momments in the past had become just intolerable to me, and I'm not talking about preaching just about God--he had an opinion on everything, and none of it particularly well articulated (he ain't no Ani Defranco or Bob Dylan when it comes to conveying his convictions except when they are about God). It just got to a point where I stopped idolizing him like I used to. Suing your fans, giving interviewes but wasting the Interviewer's (and my) time with his "New Power Talking Points", and not his continued insistance on conveying an air of 'mystery' doesn't work on a 30 year old man anymore Where others would say he evolved, I would say he platueud. I've reached a point where I like his music for what it is now, as I do not expect anymore mind blowing music from him anymore. I just expect sound, crafty, pop songs, of which he is still able to deliver. I still buy all his new material, and I still keep up with his 'news', but you're not going to see me trolling the Internet for rarities, or standing in long lines to see his shows. Actually, I won't do that for any musical acts anymore as I'm too old and too spoiled to be bothered with enduring discomfort over seeing a favorite musical act. So to cap off my long winded, rambling, response, I am still a Prince fan, but it has little or almost nothing to do with my coming here to the org. The org to me is a fun, special, place and when I see folks pissing on it, it unnerves me moreso than watching folks dump on Prince himself. grammar edit [Edited 8/31/07 12:30pm]

I'm a huge fan of his pre-2001 stuff. This new shit is all watered down and bland as fuck. It's nice to hear some honest opinions on the GD, on the P forum people act a fool when you criticise P's new music.
