I think part of the reason I have such a hard time finding men I want to date is I couldn't possibly date anyone who couldn't be TOTALLY down with my friends, and a bulk of my social circle are gay men.

How did that come to be? confuse

I missed this.

Common interests. I woulda been called a raver once upon a time. Well, in high school, really. And when the illegal raves got shut down in Mpls the only good house/dance music in the clubs were at the gay bars for a time. The regular clubs eventually caught up, but by then the damage was done. I had a gay best friend (who is now my hair stylist) and became a regular fag hag for a time. I gloried in it for a while, then I went through a phase where I pretty much refused to go to gay bars and tried to avoid all things "gay". Now it's all just a part of who I am, who I know, etc. I really don't think about it one way or another until someone happens to ask about it. lol

I love the gay community but I've always had straight and gay friends. I feel lucky to have friends from all sides of life.

It is REALLY wonderful to have a straight man say "If anyone gives you shit for being gay, let me know. I'll take care of 'em for you."

This has been said to me on several occassions. And trust me some of my straight girl friends haven't said it but I know for a fact that they would do the same.

My lesbian friends, what can I say. They have always been there for me 2.

I'm surrounded by great people. I chose them and they chose me, in some weird cosmic way.

I think if one immerses themselves in the "org culture" they can't help but become mixed into the gayness of it all.

Illuminate gays from an invasion, and you basically have a straight girl date.

I changed the title of the thread because I really wasn't after what people think of the political and social implications of us as a community, more as individuals.

growing up and living in the deep south, you can probably imagine the overall attitude towards gay folks...it's shitty, at best...I've never been one to give a fuck, I choose friends for many reasons, how or who you acheive orgasm with isn't one of them....

most people here are too blinded by religious stuff or plain ignorrance to attempt any kinda dialogue with a gay person...I have 2 openly gay friends here...it's amazing the grief I get from other people because I associate with them...
maybe sad is a better word...

Working as a flight attendant it is sometimes annoying that most of my male co-workers are gay, especially if they are goodlooking. But other than that they are the sweetest and most fun people to hang out with and they seem to be very sensitive with big hearts.

Wow - BIG question. lol

Brilliant answer, Anxiety clapping - and I'm with you on this, Miguel. nod My gay and straight friends all tend to blend into each other; I don't really separate the two unless it comes to where I go clubbing. (And that gets mixed up, as it should).

Straight, gay, whatever... hug

I haven't had a lot of experience with the gay community, but what little I've had has been positive.

Supa you're my only real gay friend and I love you to death.

Imago you're my only 15% gay friend and I love you too. biggrin

This is actually a big deal for me because when I was growing up I felt I had to be segregated from the straight community. The lesson learned was that my straight friends that found out about me reamined my friends.

I understand - totally. And what you mentioned about having straight guys sticking up for you... in some ways, it makes my legs quiver. lol But, in other ways, it is one of the sweetest, kindest, loveliest things you can hear. touched I have had many straight friends tell me they'd kick the ass of anyone who comes near me, over the years. Luckily - touch wood - I haven't had to do that... yet. confused lol

But back to what you said - not in a negative way, I honestly don't feel part of ANY specific community. Truly. I am gay, I'm proud of who I am, I mix with gay people, I mix with straight people, but things just 'happen'. Who I hang around with has absolutely nothing to do with their sexual orientation. I sort of feel right in the midddle of the two. nod Which tends to confuse people, gay and straight. confused lol

I don't have many gay friends, but one of my best friends is a gay man. I met him back in the 7th grade and we quickly became close friends. He seriously means the world to me and it always broke my heart seeing all the shit he went through in middle school and high school. I love him with all of my heart and I will always be there for him. nod
