F That Noise! You and I can't piss in public, why should this woman be able to pull out her crying-stoppers whenever she wants???? Find an out-of-the place place to do it, or use those contraptions that suck it out and store the stuff! Why is the association of a breast and feeding an infant considered VULGAR and something to be placed "out-of-the-place"? PISSING is the act of RELIEVING oneself of bodily WASTE, which rightly should be contained in a place to collect SEWAGE. It is a neccessary, though unsanitary act which I agree should be shielded from public view. However you honestly equate the act of nourishing a living infant with relieving oneself of URINE or perhaps even FECES ?

Agreed. If the context allows it and they make an effort to do it discreetly then it's okay. Some seem to want to make a spectacle out of it though. I swear I'm not trying to be rude, but how many new mothers do you know? Or have actively spent time with as they institute their newfound mothering skills? Sorry, these statements are so bothersome to me because I have yet to meet a mother who actually WANTS to make a spectacle out of breast feeding her infant...basically what you're saying is that you actually feel there are women out there who enjoy the attention of having members of the general public (at least the immature ones) gawk at her mammaries while she is caring for her child...?

Discuss. [Edited 8/29/07 15:14pm] I got off on a tangeant earlier, sorry. To answer your question, I disagree totally that breast feeding should be restricted to private areas out of public view. Why are we attempting to place women in a position of shame and banish or confine them for something like this? In my view it is both archaic and puritanical to demonize the breast, whose primary function is to nourish life. For those who are so offended by the sight of women breastfeeding in public, I would say that a fair compromise between mother and a mammary skittish public could be for mom to use a breastcloth during feeding, so that she may tend to her little one, and appease those who cannot distinguish between an act of indecency with subconscious sexual connotations, and well, feeding a hungry baby. Otherwise I just don't get the uproar some people cause over such a thing. But then that could be I'm unduly influenced by the fact that I live in a country where they have sitting stations for patrons in the middle of exclusive department stores where the elderly are allowed to rest and women are allowed to breastfeed whenever they want.

I remember a woman walking down the street, boob out with a two year old just sucking away. she was taking her "right" to breastfeed too far i think. Now that's just plain old Toni Morrison-esque, a la "Song Of Solomon". Layers of wrong with mom having attachment-abandonment issues. Now they're going to be calling that poor baby "Milkman" for the rest of his life because SHE didn't have judgment to determine when enough is enough...um um um... I'm still sitting here thinking, "no she did-int..!"

I heard of some mothers that come playtime at school, they would arrive at the school gates and put their breasts through the school gates so their kids could get their morning milk.. I can't remember where it was, but it is documented in the news somewhere. Her kisses left something to be desired... the rest of her.

I've seen so much of it around the world that this really isn't an issue to me. Do we blink an eye when other mammals are feeding their young?

A question to the Org mothers... just something that crossed my mind...
For those who have breast fed in public, what was it like that first time? I guess you never know until you've done it. Was it an odd/completely natural/joyous experience?? Were you self-conscious?

My first born was prone to have a fit from day one, so I was willing to do anything to keep him quiet, at any given time. I was one of those who carried around a receiving blanket, just incase to cover up. It was awkward, but ya do what you gotta do.
