To those who have stared death in the face

Has it changed your perception of life?

I've never had to truly face my own mortality. But I don't think I'm afraid to die. I've had a great life, very few regrets, etc.

I survived a tornado, a number of years ago. My survival and the lack of damage to my home were miracles. Surviving that sort of thing does give you some perspective on what's important in life.

My son almost died, but I don't know if that falls into this category or not.

You never cease to amaze me. You´re quite an interesting person with a very full life...
It´s good that you survived so you could continue spreading that positivity ( and raise your children, of course).

This past Febuary I was in a car accident. But luckily I came out with only a bloody nose, and a scrape under my left eye.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I haven't stared death in the face but this thread made me think that I'm very afraid to die. Not the fear of the unknown and what happens after, but I'm afraid of the possible pain and suffering. Dying a slow death due to illness or being in a horrible car accident or murdered brutally. Morbid, I know...but I've seen many family members die horrible deaths. I don't want to follow in their footsteps.

fearing death IMHO is negative but fearing NOT living to the full spurs you on to life

Suffered a pulmonary embulis after my son was born. They were waiting to see if the blood clot would either go into my heart or lung. Whilst I was lying there two nurses were making the bed and checking my drip and I was drugged up and on oxygen and in and out of consciousness but I heard them say "This young lady will not make it through the night so we must keep a constant eye on her".

Funny enough this didn't seem to bother me one bit. As I drifted into unconsciousness I felt safe, warm and I could see people in a haze and my mother in law was there and I was talking to her. She said "well you have just died but its not your time and you have to go back" I did not ant to because I felt like I belonged there even though I couldn't tell you where it was.

Anyway I woke up and said "why did you bring me back, why?" The nurse said to me "You don't know how many times we hear that".

Apparently I suffered a very mild heart attack because of the clot the heart stopped for a few minutes. The clot bypassed the heart and went into the lung but because of the oxygen deprivation I suffered this heart attack.

I am now not afraid of death. In fact when the time does come I shall welcome it. It is nothing to be scared of and the sense of belonging and being loved was overwhelming.

Yes, it changed my life. I am more tolerant, I say I love you to my family constantly, and I tend not to hold a grudge for too long and I like to make people laugh.

When I was around 8 or 9, I stupidly put a gobstopper in my mouth while bouncing on a trampoline. Needless to say, the inevitable happened and it went down my throat. I stood there choking for a few minutes, all by myself. My trampoline was all the way down the bottom of the backyard and my parent and grandparents were a long way away, too far to hear me. So there were a few seconds there were I started to think "This is it" and I tried coughing. It worked and it came straight back up. Makes you appreciate oxygen a little more lol I always usually have a few days sometimes now where I think about what I would have done if coughing hadn't worked. Still turns my stomach a bit. confused
