Flying a glider is soooo not hard. It doesn't have an engine! lol You have 3 or 4 instruments to keep track of and that's it. It was super fun! razz

You were flying a Jehova's Witness plane? I knew you were a Prince fan, but damn... eek

So how do you get those things up in the air? Do they get pulled up by another plane? And did you seriously get to land the thing yourself without any training whatsoever?

It looks really cool by the way. nod

They are pulled by a tow plane. They're attached by a cable and once you get to a certain altitude you release the catch. The tow plane takes off on it's merry way and you're up. I did fly it, but I still had an instructor in the back in case something went wrong, but I could fly it by myself if I wanted. nod I have a little bit of knowledge since my husband has been a professional pilot for almost 10 years. I will probably get my private license one of these days and he and I will go off flying around. You'd be surprised at how soon you can take one of those up by yourself--even regular planes with engines.

It must be soooo peaceful to not have to listen to any engine noise right?

And I think I would almost feel safer in a glider plane than a regular one since the risk of engine failure is a non-issue. On the other hand I suppose you have to plan both the approach and the landing much more carefully since you only get one shot at it, and are somewhat unable to correct the course upwards if needed?

The catch stays on. Before you take off you have to do a walk around to check the outside for any damage and such. You check and double check the catch to make sure it's secured.

Yes! A glider is not as dangerous as a regular plane. It is built and designed to "glide". The wind and air current are what keep you up in the air. Once you are up you can stay up for a long time or you have the capability to come down when you want. Of course if it is bad weather you wouldn't go up in the first place.

The "runway" I landed on was a grass strip. biggrin

Yes, you always have a plan for emergencies. Take offs are not hard since you have the tow plane providing all the muscle so to speak. All you have to do is keep is straight and level.

The landings I guess are a bit trickier, but that is true for jets as well. But, still they are not too difficult. You are able to see in the picture how close the wings are to the ground. You don't have much leeway to tip one way or the other. So, even if your landing is a little uneven it's no biggie.

Yes, the quiet is amazing. Floating above the earth and all of the chaos of day to day living is heavenly. biggrin
