UPDATE

Solarium cancer victim makes it to birthday bash

SKIN cancer victim Clare Oliver yesterday struggled to fulfil her dying wish for a birthday party.

After arriving in an ambulance at Luna Park for her 26th birthday bash, she didn't have the strength to get out of the vehicle.

Almost half an hour later she managed to join family and friends at the toothy gates of the fun park. Clare had had a tough night.

"I needed some extra pain relief," she said.

The young woman, dying of aggressive melanoma, captured Victorian hearts this week when she spoke out against tanning and solariums.

From her wheelchair, she said: "I was not sure I could make it. But today is like a milestone.

"I was not expected to live this long, I should have been gone two weeks ago, but I keep on fighting.

"I am going to rock inside today, but I am too weak to go on the rides."

Clare cut her birthday cake as about 70 well-wishers sang the birthday song.

Her friend of 10 years, Carmen Tong, praised Clare's strength and courage in speaking out against the fad of tanning and use of solariums.

"It would be really easy for her to hide away," Ms Tong said.

"And for those people who are really fashion-conscious and obsessed with tanning, the message is important."

Clare told of her illness this week and described herself as a fanatic tanner at the beach and in solariums.

"When I spoke out, I didn't realise the impact it would have and I am completely and utterly overwhelmed that such a small action from me can cause such a huge reaction," she said.

PARENTS, PLEASE KNOW THIS:

-Your children will receive 80% of their lifelong sun exposure by the time they are 18

-If they burn and peel THREE TIMES before the age of 13, their chances for skin cancer (melanoma, like in the article) increase DRAMATICALLY

Keep your children covered, both in clothes and sunblock. This is a serious, serious issue.

nod absolutely

my kids have never been sunburned - as long as they are living under my roof they wear hats and sunscreen outside to play outside. Hats are compulsory at their school during recess and lunch for the two school terms in the summer.

Good for your kids' school! That's wonderful. I made my kids wear those surf shirts/rash guards this summer. I also applied 45 waterproof sunblock repeatedly. I got burned horribly once and blistered. I don't want them to get skin cancer. I haven't left the house without sunscreen in over 10 years.

Smoking causes cellulite, which ought to be reason enough for any female to quit immediately or better yet, never start.

There U go lol Couldn't find the 'boob shock' one, unfortunately neutral

I have a good friend who has a sun-allergy (no idea if there's an english term for it) and thus can't tan outside. So she has been going to one of those salons for about the last 2 or three years, at least once a week... I had not seen her for months until last week... and I swear, there are wrinkles on her chest. And she's only 20... I don't wanna know what a mess that will look in 10 more years!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
