Thumbs up please As some of you already know, I'm without a job at the moment. After two years of teaching, I've been looking at some other jobs as well. The problem is that the jobs that really interest me are all in the cultural sector and very hard to get.
Two hours ago I received a phone-call from the headmaster of a school here in Ghent. They're offering me a full-time job as a language-teacher in the last two years of a high-school for future nurses. Next to that I'll have to teach a course called PAV (which is a general course focusing on certain themes, and including some basic science and other courses as well). I'm still not sure if teaching is what I want to do for the rest of my life, but a fulltime job in the city I live in (I don't have a driver's license) doesn't sound too bad, huh? I'm going to the school tomorrow, to see what they're offering me specifically. Do you keep your thumbs up? | |

Does this mean you will focus on medical terminology? Sounds like a challenge but fun too. Besides, it's always nice to have a steady full-time income. | |

Those are the things I will go and ask tomorrow. I've taught in the same classes in another school, and there the course Dutch was not that different as for other classes. A bit more stuff on the acquisition of language in childhood, but so far nothing too difficult. This PAV-thing is kinda blurry though. I truly hope there's already some material available. Otherwise it will be a very hard job. I'll have to teach English too, which scares me, as I've never taught it and the only constant way for me to get in touch with this language is this site. Of course, if you're going to bother to go to the interview at all Marie, go in with a completely thumbsup attitude like you want this job and are perfect for it, like teaching is what you want to do forever etc. (I'm sure you know that and will do that, I'm just saying).
And pray you get it. It's a lot easier to make decisions about what you want to do when you have actual options before you. And I'm not talking about being dishonest about what you want, but you never know what this teaching opportunity might open up for you, whether you leverage it into something else or make the most of the academic position you find yourself in. (Though you would look more attractive to some people in the cultural sector if you had a full time position, no?) Did the headmaster call you out of the blue or did you apply for this. But she sounded like she really wanted to see me. Maybe I wasn't enthusiastic enough about it. But I'll change that tomorrow. I guess you're absolutely right, in fact. I know I love teaching, and the rest of the future is rather blurry (writing, reading, literature, yeah right   ), so I should just do this. | |

I still have to go to the school in two hours (and I will), but this morning I received a phonecall from the European Festivals Association (EFA, based in Ghent) to tell me I'm selected for the function of chief-in-editor and project assistant. Next week on monday I'm going there for a chat. Bit confusing, all these opportunities.  | |
