This has to be one of the most confusing sexually transmitted disease ever!!!

It can come from any kind of sexual genitalia contact whether you use a condom or not, and it has a mind of its own. It can cause genital warts, and can cause abnormal pap smears in women. You can only get the vaccine if you haven't tested positive for it, but if you have it, it can clear up on its own, but there isn't a technical cure for it.

Talked to my GYN about it, he said that you can get it through sexual contact, but it really isn't known how, like through semen or just plain ole touching of the genitalia. Also, it can lead to causing precancerous cells on the cervix and with this, the female has to get pap smears every three months to watch it. There are 3 levels of displasia that can appear from the abnormal pap smear with 1 being the mildest, and 3 being the most severe form.

When its mild, this isn't a serious thing, but they do need to watch the female to see if it will get worse or if it will clear on its own.

So its like, it's a serious thing, but then its not because it's common...this was explained to me from my GYN. It's a sexually transmitted disease, but you have it for life even though the symptoms will come and go depending on your body changes.

So is this something to be afraid of or not? The doctor couldn't seem to answer this question when I asked it. Now i'm surfing the internet for answers...maybe you guys might have some????

I don't have any answers, unfortunately, but I have seen commercials on TV about HPV a lot lately.

It is a viral infection.

The strands of HPV that lead to cervical cancer are different than the ones that lead to gential warts.


Its something women should watch out for.....

I once saw a picture of a porn actresses´ asshole full with warts on some other website. They did laser surgery on her because she probably had more than 150 warts around her anus. That pic looked strange and disgusting. After the operation she still had scars from it. I´ll see if I can find that pic again, forgot her name..but yeah, HPV ain´t nuttin´to fuck with...literally.

Rhondab gave a good link. It's difficult to know what info online is good info, please ensure you are looking at reputable sites.
The trouble with hpv is that not enough research has been done to really have much conclusive evidence on anything.
Your best bet is to get regular paps. Detection is key, but it's mainly so that you can catch pre-cancerous cells early. You can't treat or cure it. (Well, you can treat warts, but not the strains that cause the warts, nor the strains that contribute to cancer.)

Estimates vary widely. I've seen estimates everywhere from 50-80% of sexually active adults. The CDC website states by age 80, 80% of women will have it.
It's incredibly, incredibly common. And you can carry it with no signs of having it, so sexually active adults pretty much have to assume all of their partners have it.

I'm in the vaccine program. They gave me shots about 4 yrs ago to study how it effects hpv.

I have been to 7 gynecologial exams during the last 4 yrs and all my papa-results have been normal. And no side effects from the vaccine... (However they might have injected a hepatitus vaccine or a placebo, I don't know..)

In the begining of the summer I went to a presentation, where they shared the newest info about hpv, the vaccine and etc. it was a lot of info, but the thing that stuck in my mind was, that hpv is a tricky infection, because it can be caught eventhought you're using a condom but also from sharing underwear!! But with regular papa-testing it may be caught quickly and taken care of.

The woman who lectured us, said that she's buying the vaccine for her non-sexually active daughters as birthday gifts, so that they're protected.. Sounds good to me..

There are studies which have shown that vaccinated ppl have a 100% protection against type 16 and 18 hpv which cause the majority of cell changes. There however isn't data on the vaccine giving protection against Uterine Cervical Cancer.. Final results can be gathered after 15-20 yrs..

I just read an article, which said the vaccine reduced cervical cancer symptoms only by 17%.. However, the result may be small because the test subjects might've already had the cancer, or that the vaccine opened new space for new virus types..

People shouldn't get scared of HPV, and the other tens of STD's that there are.. Being scared can do damage to a person's sex life and one's enjoyment of sex.. It's sad..

Ladies, get tested for papas on a regular basis and studies have also shown it's common in the gay community, so this isn't just women's issue! Men, get tested too!
